On July 8th at 9:10 p.m., the Swift County Sheriff’s Office received a report of smoke and fire coming from the Riley Bus Garage in Murdock. The fire was reported by a passerby and at the time of the incident, no one was inside the building.

Fortunately, both the Murdock and Kerkhoven Fire Departments had just finished their monthly training and were able to respond immediately. Acting Sheriff Mike Hoffman had also just completed a drone demonstration for both departments moments before the fire was reported. As a result, every responding agency was on scene within minutes, quickly bringing the fire under control and preventing what could have been catastrophic damage.

The Sheriff’s Office immediately deployed its drone equipped with thermal imaging capabilities to assist with scene assessment and help identify remaining hot spots. Murdock First Responders and the Kerkhoven Ambulance Service also arrived within minutes, providing medical standby and support for the firefighters.
The overall damage to the building was minimal, and no injuries were reported as a result of the fire.

The professionalism, preparedness, and teamwork demonstrated by every agency involved were exceptional and should be a source of pride for these communities. Their rapid response is a reminder that training and coordination truly make a difference.

Volunteer firefighters, EMTs, and first responders serve their communities with commitment and sacrifice. While the job is often inconvenient and demanding, it is also incredibly rewarding. These are duty-driven individuals who are essential to the safety and success of our communities.

If you've ever considered giving back, I encourage you to look into joining your local fire department, ambulance service, or first responder organization. Your community needs dedicated people willing to answer the call.

This fire remains under investigation.
