Amid a busy evening filled with calls and the challenges that come with serving our community, we were pleasantly surprised by the generosity of one of our local restaurants.

🚨 Public Service Announcement – Kermit Residents 🚨

We are aware of the concerns regarding the recently installed siren system. We understand that the increased volume and frequency of the sirens can be disruptive, and we appreciate your patience as we work through these issues.

The City has been notified, and the siren company is scheduled to return to make programming adjustments that will hopefully resolve the current concerns.

Many residents have asked about the siren that sounds around lunchtime. This is a long-standing tradition that historically served as a way for citizens to reset clocks and keep track of the time, particularly before modern technology made timekeeping readily accessible.

While that tradition remains, the primary purpose of the siren system is to alert the community to emergencies and to notify first responders when assistance is needed. Kermit Volunteer Fire Department is a 100% volunteer organization, and the siren remains an important tool for alerting our members to emergency calls.

If you hear the siren during the overnight hours, it generally means that our volunteers are responding to an emergency. Over the past several weeks, our department has experienced an increase in nighttime calls, resulting in more frequent siren activations.

We are aware of the concerns and comments being shared online, and we want the community to know that we are actively working with the City and the siren company to find a solution. At the same time, we ask that you remember the dedicated volunteers who are responding to emergencies when those sirens sound. Please keep them, and those affected by the emergencies, in your thoughts and prayers.

As soon as we receive clarification regarding the updated siren programming, we will share additional information with the community, including what each siren activation pattern means for different types of emergencies.

The Kermit Volunteer Fire Department stands alongside fire departments throughout Texas in mourning the tragic line-of-duty loss of Odessa Fire Rescue Lieutenant Isai Huerta. Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences are with Lieutenant Huerta’s family, friends, loved ones, the members of Odessa Fire Rescue, and the entire Odessa community as they navigate this profound loss. His service, dedication, and sacrifice will not be forgotten.

Odessa Fire Rescue Mourns the Loss of Firefighter Isai Huerta

ODESSA, Texas — Odessa Fire Rescue is mourning the tragic loss of one of its own following a structure fire on Sunday evening.

At 4:59 p.m., Odessa Fire Rescue crews responded to a residential trailer fire in the 1900 block of South Westcliff Road. While firefighters were operating on scene, conditions deteriorated rapidly, resulting in injuries to three firefighters.

All three firefighters were transported to Medical Center Hospital for treatment. Tragically, one firefighter succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased at the hospital.

The fallen firefighter has been identified as 29-year-old Lieutenant Isai Huerta, who faithfully served the citizens of Odessa as a member of Odessa Fire Rescue for the past nine years. His next of kin has been notified.

"Isai was a huge part of our organization, a true firefighter," said Odessa Fire Rescue Chief Jason Cotton. "He was always happy, always willing to help, and he truly enjoyed the job. Our department is in need of prayer, guidance, and grace as we navigate moving forward. We grieve alongside Isai's family and ask our community to keep them and our firefighters in their thoughts during this incredibly difficult time."

Odessa Mayor Cal Hendrick added, "Tonight, Odessa has lost a hero. Firefighter Isai Huerta dedicated his life to protecting others, and his sacrifice will never be forgotten. On behalf of the City of Odessa, we extend our deepest condolences to his family, his brothers and sisters in the fire service, and everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. We ask our community to join us in keeping them in our prayers as we mourn this heartbreaking loss."

The two other firefighters injured during the incident did not sustain life-threatening injuries and are receiving care and support.

The Texas State Association of Fire Fighters is leading the investigation. Representatives from the International Association of Fire Fighters are also expected to arrive in Odessa tonight to provide additional support.

Odessa Fire Rescue has already begun debriefing personnel and is ensuring first responders have access to all available emotional, mental health, and peer-support resources.

Odessa Fire Rescue will hold a press conference tomorrow to answer questions and provide an update on the investigation.
