Public Notice Regarding Fire Protection in the Former Dunlow Fire District

At this time, the Kermit Volunteer Fire Department is actively providing fire protection coverage to a large portion of the former Dunlow Fire District. Our members remain committed to ensuring that the affected communities continue to receive dependable fire protection during this transition.

We understand that many members of the community are concerned about the future of fire protection in the Dunlow area and are eager to help. We sincerely appreciate the support, encouragement, and willingness of community members to become involved. While Kermit Volunteer Fire Department is providing coverage, our members are also exploring all available options to assist the Dunlow community in reestablishing a fire department of its own.

As these efforts move forward, it is important that all discussions, recruitment efforts, donation requests, and plans involving fire protection remain organized, coordinated, and compliant with all applicable laws and requirements. Establishing or rebuilding a fire department involves more than simply collecting donations or recruiting members. Proper organization, legal requirements, insurance, training, equipment, leadership, and operational planning must all be addressed to ensure that any future department is established responsibly and can provide safe, dependable service to the community.

At this time, Kermit Volunteer Fire Department has not requested donations from the public. Any future donation requests, membership opportunities, official updates, or department needs will be communicated directly through the official Kermit Volunteer Fire Department page and authorized department channels.

We encourage anyone interested in supporting these efforts to follow our official page and contact the department directly. We appreciate the community’s patience and support as we work together to protect the area and explore a responsible, sustainable path forward for fire protection in the Dunlow community.

Today, the members of the Kermit Volunteer Fire Department mourn the loss of one of our own, Harold Marcum.

Harold dedicated many years of faithful service to our department and to the people of our community. His willingness to answer the call, help his neighbors, and serve alongside his fellow firefighters left a lasting impact that will not be forgotten.

We are grateful for the time, commitment, and sacrifices Harold made throughout his years of service. His legacy will live on through the department he helped strengthen and the lives he touched along the way.

On behalf of the Kermit Volunteer Fire Department, we extend our deepest condolences to Harold’s family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

Rest easy, Harold. Your watch is over. We will take it from here.

Kermit Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched to Kermit PK-8 School for reports of smoke inside the building.

When crews arrived, we found a light haze of smoke in the east wing of the school. After checking things out, the cause was determined to be a faulty fan motor and no active fire was found.

All other responding units were canceled, and our crews stayed on scene to make sure everything was safe. The building was fully cleared before students were released.

We’d like to thank the school staff for their quick actions, as well as our auto aid departments for their support and quick response.
