One year anniversary. On Saturday May 24th @ 20:25 hours B-Shift crews were dispatched to a motor vehicle accident with rescue at Main Street and Bodenhamer Street. Units arrived on scene to find a catastrophic MVA. While on this incident for approximately seven minutes, firefighters noticed smoke coming from the Caudill Commercial Electric Building at 208 East Bodenhamer Street. As units were leaving the first scene heavy smoke and flames could be seen coming from the Charlie/Delta side of the building on arrival. Crews deployed multiple lines however, the age of the building had allowed the fire to quickly spread throughout the three-story building built in 1897. Crews were quickly pulled out and defensive fire operations started. Hydrants in the area could not keep up with the needed fire flow and several apparatuses were nearly damaged or destroyed. A second alarm was called by Incident Commander Battalion Chief David Bowman at around 20:54 requesting tankers as several hydrants had been tapped and could not keep up. Eventually, an adequate source of water was established after laying lines across the railroad tracks and pumping the hydrant at 215 Drummond Street. Crews remained on scene the rest of the shift and several hours the next day. This was the most spectacular fire in the history of Kernersville.
