Habitat for Humanity Kerr County

Habitat for Humanity Kerr County Habitat for Humanity Kerr County is a non-profit construction company and mortgage company. Habitat Kerr carries the mortgage for the life of the loan.

Organized 1989 by Burly Burleson, Maud Jennings, Rev Bill Blackburn, Habitat for Humanity Kerr County is a non-profit construction company and mortgage company with a mission to provide affordable homeownership with a ‘hand up, not a hand out’ model of service. Low income families (40 to 60% of the county median income) complete a formal application process. Upon acceptance into the program each

signs a partnership agreement to provide sweat equity hours, $1600 toward closing fees, and attend mandatory pre-ownership classes. Upon completion of their partnership a home is purchased (for the cost to construct) and the debt repaid over twenty to thirty years, interest free (0%). Payments include property tax and hazard insurance escrows. To date 114 homes have been constructed and sold

Board of Directors set policy. Staff executes policy and conducts day to day operation. Habitat ReStore supports the mission of Habitat with retail sales. The store is open Wednesday through Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Funds to support the mission come from donations, mortgage payments by current homeowners, ReStore Sales, grants and non-monetary donations. Habitat Kerr, and the families that own and pay for their homes, support the local economy. Families contribute via increased disposable income (mortgage payments are most often less than the rent families paid prior to ownership) and become fully vested tax-paying citizens. Habitat Kerr’s tangible contribution includes the purchasing of building materials from local vendors as well as staff salaries, and the less quantifiable impact of creating new quality-constructed homes to the local housing inventory.

Today, we kicked off something new at Habitat, our very first Partner Build Day! 💙

This special day brought together our future homeowners, their families, and Habitat staff to begin the journey to homeownership together. Before the construction really gets underway, we wanted an opportunity to connect, get to know one another, and celebrate the exciting road ahead. 🏡

The support that has surrounded our community over the last year has been truly incredible. 💙

Thank you to everyone who has given their time, resources, and hearts to this recovery effort. Together, we’re helping families find hope, healing, and a place to call home once again.

After the July 4 flood, Robert and Victoria Hight returned to a home forever changed. What they found next was a community that showed up.

With support from partners, such as Habitat for Humanity Kerr County, Connective, and H-E-B, and volunteers, the Hights are now moving forward and back into their home.

“I'm not from Texas and so it was surprising seeing strangers come from everywhere just to help—it changed my perspective on how I see everything.” Victoria shared.

Moments like these reflect not only the rebuilding of a home, but the strength of a community that shows up when it matters most.

Yesterday, part of the Habitat team had the opportunity to volunteer with Arcadia Recovery Collaboration to help furnish a new home for a flood survivor.💙

What the ARC is doing for families in our community is truly incredible! It was an honor to be a small part of it and to witness firsthand the impact they are making.

What a special evening at the Habitat admin office 💙

We officially welcomed our future homeowners during our Future Homeowner Orientation! After finishing the evening together, we walked outside to a beautiful double rainbow stretching across the sky. A symbol of transformation, hope, good luck and new beginnings.

It felt like the perfect reminder of what this journey is all about. 🌈

Tonight marked the beginning of an exciting new chapter, and we are so excited to introduce you to these amazing families and share their stories of resilience and hope in the months ahead.

This is more than building houses, it’s building brighter futures. 🏡✨

In just a few short days, families who lost their homes in the flood will begin a new chapter in Mariposa. ❤️

We are so honored that the first ten homes in our new community are helping provide a fresh start for families who lost everything. While the first few families prepare to move in soon, the remaining homes are still under construction and quickly moving toward completion.

We cannot wait to see all ten homes filled with families, laughter, and new memories. 🏡

Thank you to the Community Foundation of the Texas Hill Country for empowering Habitat for Humanity Kerr County to make this possible through the Kerr County Flood Relief Fund.

Some parts of a home cannot be replaced.

When floodwaters devastated this home, Loretta & Stanley believed one of their most treasured memories had been lost forever. Before Stanley’s mother passed away, she had hand-painted a beautiful forest mural across the bedroom walls.

After the flood, almost everything was destroyed.

But Jay Eickhoff, Habitat for Humanity Kerr County’s Disaster Recovery Construction Manager, noticed something incredible. The closet doors containing part of the mural had survived.

Without telling the homeowners, Jay carefully saved the doors, framed them, and transformed them into beautiful pieces of art that now hang inside the rebuilt home so that memory could live on.

Today, the home is complete and Loretta is finally back home.

At Habitat, recovery is about more than rebuilding houses. It is about preserving the memories that make a house feel like home.❤️

One of the first homes Habitat for Humanity Kerr County was trusted to repair, through the support of the Community Foundation of the Texas Hill Country, was the home of Don and Anne.

On July 4th, floodwater crept beneath their home. Their entire floor system had to be replaced.

Like so many families after the flood, their son did not wait for help to arrive. He immediately stepped in to help his parents recover, spending evenings and weekends working on the floors while balancing his own job, family, and responsibilities. He carried the weight of trying to hold everything together for the people he loved most.

But disaster recovery is exhausting, especially for families already carrying so much on their own.

That is where Habitat and the Community Foundation stepped in. After their son began the difficult work of repairing the home himself, Habitat was able to come alongside the family, help complete the repairs and restore stability

Don and Anne originally only reported damage to the interior floors. But knowing how much they loved their screened-in porch, Jay decided to look beneath the carpet and discovered severe dry rot. Even then, Don and Anne insisted they did not need anything more repaired.

Jay did not take no for an answer. He replaced the sub-floor, the worn storm door and added new carpet to the porch, restoring a space that had long been part of their everyday life and comfort. Anne later shared that she once woke up in the middle of the night, walked onto her repaired porch, and cried because she loved it so much.

Every family’s recovery journey looks different. Sometimes disaster recovery is not just about repairing a house. Sometimes it is about restoring the spaces that make a house feel like home.

Thanks to the support of The Community Foundation, families across the Hill Country are continuing to recover, one home at a time.
