One of the first homes Habitat for Humanity Kerr County was trusted to repair, through the support of the Community Foundation of the Texas Hill Country, was the home of Don and Anne.
On July 4th, floodwater crept beneath their home. Their entire floor system had to be replaced.
Like so many families after the flood, their son did not wait for help to arrive. He immediately stepped in to help his parents recover, spending evenings and weekends working on the floors while balancing his own job, family, and responsibilities. He carried the weight of trying to hold everything together for the people he loved most.
But disaster recovery is exhausting, especially for families already carrying so much on their own.
That is where Habitat and the Community Foundation stepped in. After their son began the difficult work of repairing the home himself, Habitat was able to come alongside the family, help complete the repairs and restore stability
Don and Anne originally only reported damage to the interior floors. But knowing how much they loved their screened-in porch, Jay decided to look beneath the carpet and discovered severe dry rot. Even then, Don and Anne insisted they did not need anything more repaired.
Jay did not take no for an answer. He replaced the sub-floor, the worn storm door and added new carpet to the porch, restoring a space that had long been part of their everyday life and comfort. Anne later shared that she once woke up in the middle of the night, walked onto her repaired porch, and cried because she loved it so much.
Every family’s recovery journey looks different. Sometimes disaster recovery is not just about repairing a house. Sometimes it is about restoring the spaces that make a house feel like home.
Thanks to the support of The Community Foundation, families across the Hill Country are continuing to recover, one home at a time.
