The first of the many fun Borough Candidate Forums is done and online!
Thanks to the attendees who have chosen to be involved either by attending, sending in good questions, or both. It is the collective involvement and community spirit that makes Ketchikan a joyous place to live in, rain or shine!

Felix Wong works for Vigor Alaska. His job requires him to spend time in other communities in Alaska. This has caused Felix to attend Assembly meetings by telephone several times. I have not been privy to information that indicates that Felix is not fulfilling his duties as an Assembly member. However, bylaws restrict the number of consecutive meetings attended telephonically (electronically) to two. The Assembly is allowed to waive this requirement by a majority vote, I believe. Last night, Mr. Wong was essentially voted off the Assembly initially but a technicality saved his seat (see story on KRBD.org).
I ask you to consider if this bylaw is obsolete these days. Communication technology has advanced significantly and meetings are easily "attended" electronically. Our world has changed in other ways as well. More and more, jobs have expectations of travel and multi-site performance of duties. Do we want to repeatedly deal with Assembly members facing possible ejection from their duly elected positions or should outmoded bylaws be repealed? Let your Assembly members know your thoughts on this.

Alaska has a thing or two to learn and avoid from this situation, and we need to learn ASAP.
Statistically, this state's budget operates exactly like that of an oil-rich nation.
Also statistically speaking, both Saudi Arabia and Alaska are dependent on oil prices hovering around USD$100/br. Oil is evidently way cheaper than that now.
Our saving grace is we have a decent savings pad to buy us time to get formulate a sustainable budget plan. We also have stricter policies that prevent us from increasing spending of our existing assets. The subsequent benefit is that we still get to keep our AAAm S&P rating.
What needs to be done won't be pretty; doing nothing and going broke is going to be uglier.

The IMF warned that Saudi Arabia may run out of the financial assets needed to support spending within five years. Is Saudi Arabia's government doing enough?

In an effort to have a clearer picture of what the Borough is charged with maintaining and/or upgrading, Assemblyman Bradford and myself took a tour with two individuals from the Borough's Public Works department, Alex and Morgan.
It is and will be an enlightening experience.

Congratulations to Felix Wong! Thank you to all his supporters! It looks as though he has taken one of the seats on the Borough Assembly, carrying the majority of the precincts!
And now the work begins!
