RTs, follows, mentions do not equal endorsement. The Tongass National Forest sustains the lands and people of Southeast Alaska, managing 16.7 million acres of public lands to protect its unique ecological values while supporting a robust, diverse economy for the 75,000 people who call the Tongass home. The National Forest Foundation, chartered by Congress, engages Americans in community-based and

national programs that promote the health and public enjoyment of the 193-million-acre National Forest System, administers private gifts of funds and land for the benefit of the National Forests. http://www.nationalforests.org/

The Forest Service manages a system of 155 national forests, 20 national grasslands, and 222 research and experimental forests, as well as other special areas, covering more than 192 million acres of public land. Forest Service staff from the Wrangell Ranger District are collaborating with the Alaska Department of Fish & Game and Alaska SeaGrant to conduct European Green Crab surveys at Anan Bay.

This project is an excellent example of how the Forest Service works hand-in-hand with partners to manage forests. Emerging threats like invasive species make collaborative work like this essential to maintaining healthy ecosystems within the Tongass National Forest, which supports a wide range of wildlife and aquatic species.

Through beach walking and crab traps provided by ADF&G, members of the Anan crew and other Forest Service staff will conduct monthly surveys gather data throughout the summer.

Being larger than 10 different U.S. states, traversing the Tongass National Forest can be a challenge - especially when loaded down with hundreds of pounds of supplies.

To maintain the trails and cabins in the wild spaces people like to recreate, the Forest Service needs helicopters to bring in supplies. Recently, staff on Prince of Wales received a sling load of lumber for the Staney Creek Cabin porch re-build. There was also a delivery of rip rap and gravel for El Cap Trail maintenance.

Sea Day!

Forest Service staff from the Wrangell Ranger District partnered with the Wrangell Cooperative Association and the local school to offer a day of fun, educational stations for kindergartners grade school kids.

The kids learn about invertebrates, dug for shellfish, collected fish in a seine net, pretended to be salmon protecting their eggs during a game, learned about skulls and fur of different animals, and viewed sea creatures in a tank.
