We want to take the time to recognize two officers who, earlier this month, received notable awards from two local organizations. Officer Kayla Gudgell was awarded the Noon Optimist Club’s Officer of the Year for 2025, and Officer Ed Simoni was awarded the DorWood Optimist Club’s Officer of the Year for 2025.

These awards reflect their dedication, professionalism, and commitment to serving our community. We are proud of their accomplishments and grateful for the positive impact they make every day. Congratulations to both of you!

Text-to-9-1-1 is now available in our community!

While voice calls are always preferred because they are real-time, faster and allow dispatchers to hear background noise that can provide critical information, we know that is not always possible. Texting 9-1-1 is a safe and important option for those who are hearing or speech impaired or in situations where speaking out loud could put you in danger.

Call if you can. Text if you can't.

If you ever need to text 9-1-1, here is what to know:

Enter 9-1-1 as the recipient
Send your exact location first
Briefly describe the emergency
Answer questions from the dispatcher
Do not use abbreviations or emojis

We hope you never need it, but we want you to know it is there. Stay safe, Kettering.

We are excited to announce three promotions and a new patrol officer at KPD! Last night, Josh Wolf was promoted to Lieutenant, Darrell Breneman and Matt Harper were promoted to Sergeant, and Rhett Burtch was sworn in as our newest patrol officer.

Lieutenant Josh Wolf started his career with KPD in 2017 as a patrol officer and was promoted to Sergeant in 2023. Over the years, he supervised the Afternoon Watch and Internal Affairs. He has also served as a Taser Instructor, Field Training Officer, SWAT Team Officer, SWAT Team Commander, Accident Investigation Team, Bike Patrol Unit, and Honor Guard. Prior to joining Kettering, Josh served with the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office. He holds an Associates Degree from Miami University and will be completing the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department Leadership Academy in June.

Sergeant Darrell Breneman’s career spans over 24 years of service and dedication. Joining the Kettering Police Department in 2021 as a Patrol Officer, Darrell quickly became known for his expertise, versatility, and leadership qualities. Throughout his career, he has served on the Motorcycle Unit, as a Field Training Officer, and Evidence Tech. Prior to joining Kettering, Darrell served with the Madison Township, Union County, and Marion County Sheriff’s Offices.

Sergeant Matt Harper has consistently demonstrated professionalism, leadership, and a strong commitment to serving the community. Matt joined KPD in 2021, and he has since served in a variety of roles, including K-9 Officer, Field Training Officer, Evidence Tech, and SWAT Team, earning the respect of both peers and the community. Prior to KPD, Matt served with the West Carrollton Police Department and Enon Police Department.

Officer Rhett Burtch comes to the Kettering Police Department from the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office, where he has served as a Deputy since 2024. After graduating from high school, Rhett joined the United States Air Force and served two years on active duty as a Military Police Officer. Officer Burtch brings a strong commitment to service and public safety to the department.

Please join us in congratulating these gentlemen on some well-deserved promotions, and welcoming Officer Burtch to Kettering!
