This month’s Resident Speaker Series featured the incredibly talented Charli Dunford, who shared the stories, inspiration, and creativity behind her artwork and artistic journey.

Residents enjoyed learning about Charli’s travels for art, the many unique projects she has worked on over the years, and the creative process behind bringing her pieces to life. She even guided everyone through how she imagines and creates her artwork, encouraging residents to picture how they might create their own masterpieces.

One of the highlights of the presentation was Charli’s “100 Painted Envelopes” project, where she created and mailed beautifully hand-painted envelopes to well-known public figures and celebrities — combining creativity, connection, and a touch of surprise through art.

Thank you, Charli, for sharing your talent, experiences, and passion with our community!

Happy Memorial Day from One Lincoln Park!

Today, we honor and remember the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. As we gather with family, friends, and neighbors, we are reminded of the freedoms we share and the importance of community, connection, and time together.

As America begins celebrating its 250th anniversary, may we continue to reflect on the strength, courage, and unity that have shaped our nation’s story.

Wishing everyone a meaningful Memorial Day filled with remembrance, gratitude, and togetherness.

Resident Spotlight: Janie & Arlen Bee

In honor of World Bee Day, we’re celebrating our very own Queen and King Bee here at One Lincoln Park—Janie and Arlen Bee!

After spending 24 years living the military lifestyle, Janie and Arlen know the true meaning of community. With family often far away during their years of service, they learned to rely on neighbors for friendship and support—something they say feels very familiar here at One Lincoln Park.

Having lived at One Lincoln Park for 3.5 years, the Bees quickly found themselves at home despite never having lived in Ohio before. What stands out most to them is the caring atmosphere and the way staff work together to prioritize residents’ comfort, happiness, and care.

Janie, who also serves as the Chair of the Welcome Committee, brings that same spirit of connection to new residents, helping foster a strong sense of belonging and ensuring everyone feels embraced by the community from the moment they arrive.

Janie especially enjoys entertaining and was pleasantly surprised to discover how many opportunities there are to gather with friends and host get-togethers throughout the community. Together, they love taking advantage of the chauffeur transportation service, delicious dining options, Tai Chi classes, music programs, and the community library.

The Bees say moving to One Lincoln Park not only brought them closer to family, but also introduced them to many new friendships and a love for the Dayton area.

One of Janie’s favorite memories? Participating in the annual carnival and getting to throw pies in the faces of the transportation team “all in good fun,” she says, laughing about what great sports they were.

Her advice for anyone considering a move to One Lincoln Park:
“If you can’t be happy at OLP, you can’t be happy anywhere!”

From friendship and laughter to community and connection, Janie and Arlen truly help make One Lincoln Park such a sweet place to call home.

This week, we had the privilege of hearing from Jane with Artemis Center as part of our Cultural Forum series. Jane shared an important and eye-opening discussion about domestic violence, elder abuse, and the many forms abuse can take — including physical, emotional, verbal, financial, and neglect.

We learned about the warning signs, why abuse is often underreported, and the many reasons it can be difficult for individuals experiencing abuse to leave unsafe situations. The conversation also highlighted how older adults can be especially vulnerable to abuse and isolation, making awareness and advocacy so important.

Artemis Center has helped more than 140,000 survivors and their families through crisis intervention, safety planning, education, and support services. They also shared that 1 in 4 women and 1 in 7 men will experience intimate partner violence in their lifetime.

We are grateful to Jane and Artemis Center for helping educate our community and for the compassionate work they do every day to empower survivors to heal and live free from violence.

One Lincoln Park is honored to have been invited by Donna Kastner to be guest presenters in the Retirement Dialogues: Fostering New Pathways for Modern Elders UDOLLI series in April. Our Executive Director, Tricia Atwood, Assistant Executive Director, Mike Bessler, and Director of Business Development, Molly Blumer, shared how today’s older adults are redefining what it means to age well — shifting the conversation from limitations and “not ready yet” to connection, purpose, independence, growth, choice, and control.

Through our presentation, “Live Better Longer,” we highlighted the importance of community and social engagement, lifelong learning, wellness, friendships, creativity, and community involvement in helping older adults thrive. We are excited to be part of conversations that encourage positive aging and celebrate the opportunities, fulfillment, and vibrant lifestyles available in senior living today.
