The Sunshine Community Services Center completed our summer session of the Step Ladder Tutoring Program at the Kewanee Public Library. We were able to assist middle school students in improving their competency and skill mastery in reading and math. Students read to a tutor or staff for 20 minutes, completed math assessments, participated in other activities or played games during each session. Those attending received free school supplies.

Thanks to all students who participated, Kewanee Public Library for providing space, Regional Daily News and Kewanee Voice for informing the public of the event, and all of our supporters and sponsors who made it possible for us to have this summer session for the last 13 years.

We are planning on starting the Step Ladder Tutoring in the middle schools after Labor Day.

Step Ladder Summer Tutoring Program at the Kewanee Public Library will start on Tuesday, July 21, 2026 - Thursday, July 30, 2026, from 1:00 p.m. - 2:15 p.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. The program is for middle school students who have completed 6th grade entering the 7th grade, 7th grade entering 8th grade, and 8th graders before starting the 9th grade.

Our focus will be on reading and math. During each session, students will read to a tutor or staff, do pre and post testing in math, get free books, snacks, play games and will receive free school supplies at the end of the two-week session.

Thanks to the community and surrounding areas for their continued support of the Step Ladder Tutoring Program. A special thanks to Save-a-Lot store from having a Round-Up to support our program. They were able to raise $481.00. Together we are, "Helping one child at a Time."
