Update: Autopsy Finds Skeletal Remains Belong to Unidentified Adult at Northeast Park

On May 29, 2026, at 9:00 a.m., an autopsy was conducted on the skeletal remains located at Northeast Park. At the conclusion of the autopsy, a preliminary report found that the skeletonized remains are those of an unidentified adult. A forensic anthropology examination will now be scheduled as the next step in helping identify the remains. Investigators are also working to obtain dental records for comparison as part of the identification process.

If anyone has information that may assist in this investigation, they are asked to contact the Kewanee Police Department at (309) 853-1911 and ask for the Investigations Division.

Kewanee Police Department Seeking Public Assistance

On May 29, 2026, at approximately 3:25 AM, an unknown individual was captured on a Ring security camera in the 200 block of S. Chestnut approaching a parked black Ford SUV in a residential driveway.

The suspect, wearing a bright red hooded sweatshirt, black pants, and white shoes, was seen opening the driver’s door, reaching inside the vehicle, and then walking toward the rear of the property.

We are asking for the public’s help in identifying this individual. If you recognize the person in the video, know their identity, or have any information about this incident, please contact the Kewanee Police Department immediately.

⚠️ These attacks can bypass multi-factor authentication (MFA) by tricking you into entering a login code—even if everything looks legitimate.

✅ Never enter a login code unless you requested it
✅ Don’t click links in unexpected emails or messages

Investigation Ongoing at Northeast Park

Kewanee, IL — On May 27, 2026, at approximately 3:02 p.m., the Kewanee Police Department was contacted by an employee of the Kewanee Park District regarding a discovery at Northeast Park.

The employee reported that a company was in the process of emptying a restroom waste holding tank located on the north end of the park. During that process, workers discovered skeletal remains, including what appeared to be a human skull. The Kewanee Police Department was immediately notified.

Officers responded to the scene and began an investigation.

At this time, the remains are being treated as if they are human pending further examination and confirmation.

The Kewanee Police Department is being assisted by the Henry County Sheriff’s Office, Illinois State Police Detectives, Illinois State Police Crime Scene Investigators, and the Henry County Coroner’s Office. Investigators will work to determine whether the remains are human and, if so, to assist with identification and further analysis.

There is no threat to public safety at this time. Community members are asked to avoid the area and do not enter the park property.

Northeast Park will be closed to the public through the night. The Kewanee Park District will provide updates via its official page regarding when the park will reopen for public use.

Additional information will be released as it becomes available.

Vehicle Crash Leads to DUI and Multiple Charges in Kewanee

Date: May 26th, 2026

On May 23, 2026, at approximately 9:04 p.m., Kewanee Police officers were dispatched to the alleyway between the 1100 block of May Street and Florence Street in reference to a traffic accident. Upon arrival, officers observed a black SUV located west of the creek with heavy damage and full airbag deployment. Officers made contact with the driver, who was still seated in the vehicle, and immediately rendered aid.

During the course of the investigation, officers determined that the driver, identified as Jeffery L. Weir, 66, of Kewanee, Illinois, had been attending a graduation party in the 1100 block of June Street prior to the incident. Witnesses reported that Weir left the gathering operating his vehicle in an aggressive and erratic manner.

According to witness accounts, Weir lost control of the vehicle while driving away, striking a garage, and continued traveling around the block. He then re-entered residential backyards from June Street before ultimately crashing the vehicle into the creek.

Weir was transported to OSF St. Luke Medical Center in Kewanee for treatment. After being medically cleared, he was taken into custody and transported to the Henry County Jail.

Weir has been charged with the following offenses:
• Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol (625 ILCS 5/11-501(a)(2))
• Driving Under the Influence of Drugs (625 ILCS 5/11-501(a)(4))
• Driving Under the Influence – Combination of Alcohol and Drugs (625 ILCS 5/11-501(a)(5))
• Aggravated Assault with a Motor Vehicle (720 ILCS 5/12-2)
• Driving While License Revoked (625 ILCS 5/6-303)
• Reckless Driving (625 ILCS 5/11-503)

This incident remains under investigation.

Today, we pause to remember the men and women of our Armed Forces who gave their lives in service to our country.

Their sacrifice is not something we take lightly. It is the reason we are able to live, serve, protect, and raise our families in the freedoms we enjoy today.

On behalf of the Kewanee Police Department, we honor the fallen, remember their families, and remain grateful for the courage and selflessness that built and protected this nation.

Tomorrow, one year will have passed since Catrelle Reed was reported missing. On May 30, 2025, his body was located in Henry County, west of Kewanee.

This case remains an open homicide investigation. The Illinois State Police is leading the investigation, with assistance from the Kewanee Police Department.

Catrelle’s family continues to grieve his loss, and they deserve answers. Even the smallest piece of information may help investigators move this case forward.
