Inspect holiday lights before you stow them away. Throw away light strands with frayed or pinched wires.

Decorating this weekend?
Follow these safe decorating tips:
🎄 Check your extension cords. Make sure they are not damaged.
🎄 Don't place extension cords under rugs.
🎄 Keep doors and exits clear.
We know it is tempting with heating prices being so high, but heating your home with an oven is very dangerous.
Here's why:
🔘 The oven is designed to heat the small confined space of the oven itself; allowing the heating elements to come on and off as needed.
🔘 If the oven is used to heat a room, the elements continue to operate and are more likely to experience a failure.
Additionally, the electricity needed would end up being more expensive than a portable space heater that is specifically designed to heat your home.
Before you use your heating system this year, make sure it is safe.
Birds and little animals don't realize chimneys are not a safe place to nest. There may also be damage or deterioration throughout the year that can make them unsafe.
More Fire Prevention Week photos.
The Great Chicago Fire is the reason we have fire prevention week today. We understand that parts of what the fire service is charged with are not popular. Burn bans, open burning regulations, code enforcement and fire inspections. Although those items may be unpopular and cause investments to be made or may cause inconveniences to the public there is a simple reason for them. We don’t want to repeat the devastation that happened 150 years ago. Thank you to everyone for your cooperation in fire prevention. Fire really is everyone’s fight.
Interesting post on the even lesser known fires that occurred in Michigan in 1871.
In keeping with this year's fire prevention week theme of learning the sounds of safety. We would like to remind everyone of the importance of testing their smoke and CO detectors. Remember to check the expiration date on those detectors as well.
A few pictures from this past week's fire safety education program with kids from a local school. A big thank you to the members that took time off of their day jobs to come help out with this program.

The Kewaunee Fire Department will be at the Kewaunee schools this week doing fire prevention education. For parents with school age children take a minute to discuss the information that is being presented to them. Reinforce your escape plans and what to do when alarms are going off.
Today begins fire prevention week for this year. It happens every year the same week the Chicago and Peshtigo Fire occurred 150 years ago.
Cooking is the leading cause of home fires and home fire injuries. Remind your community to:
🍳 Keep an eye on what you fry. Most cooking fires start when someone is frying food.
👀 Watch what you are cooking. Fires start when the heat is too high. If you see any smoke or the grease starts to boil, turn the burner off.
🌞 Make sure you are awake and alert. Alcohol and some drugs can make you sleepy.
Remember to safeguard chemicals you use in your home.
✔️ Follow the instructions on the label when you store household chemicals.
✔️ Store household chemicals in their original containers.
✔️ Never store household chemicals that can cause a fire in the sun or near an open flame or heat source.
✔️ Store household chemicals out of the reach of children and pets.
✔️ Use safety locks and guardrails on shelves and cabinets when you store household chemicals. This will prevent them from falling or tipping.

All of Wisconsin is at VERY HIGH fire danger as we head into the Easter holiday weekend. With low humidity and high winds in the forecast, it's critical that you do your part to prevent wildfires this weekend.
Burning permits are suspended across the DNR Fire Protection Area. Outside the DNR Fire Protection Area? Check locally for restrictions.
Any fire could quickly start and spread in these conditions. Avoid all burning, including campfires if possible, and be sure to extinguish and dispose of cigarettes properly. Those venturing outdoors should also use caution with off-road vehicles or equipment that can create a spark and start a fire.
There have already been more than 200 wildfires reported in Wisconsin so far this year, burning over 450 acres.
Let's all make Smokey Bear proud.
Please welcome Kewaunee's New Fire Chief Joe Nemecek
