National Safe Boating Week is observed from May 16 through May 22, serving as the official kickoff for the summer boating season.

The Village of Key Biscayne reminds residents that safe boating saves lives. Whether you're heading out for a quick cruise or a day of fishing, following these five essential safety tips helps protect you and your passengers.

-Life Jackets Save Lives; Wear One at All Times: Don’t just have life jackets on board, actually wear them.
-Never Boat Under the Influence: Impairment slows reaction time and increases the risk of fatal accidents. Stay sober and stay safe.
-Take a Boating Safety Course: Knowledge saves lives. Even experienced boaters benefit from a safety refresher. The more you know, the better you can prevent accidents.
-Follow Speed Limits and No-Wake Zones: Speeding and ignoring posted zones lead to collisions, capsizing, and injuries. Always operate at a safe speed, especially in crowded or shallow areas.
-Watch for Swimmers, Divers, and Other Boats: Stay alert. Collisions are one of the leading causes of boating injuries and deaths. Keep a proper lookout at all times.

This week, our Village Emergency Management Team came together for a hurricane preparedness drill.

These exercises are critical to keeping our community safe, strengthening coordination between departments, and making sure we’re ready to act quickly when it matters most.

Hurricane season is a reminder that readiness is everyone’s responsibility — and we’re committed to being prepared for whatever comes our way.

Use the calm days now to tackle the tasks that protect your property later — from trimming trees to checking shutters and securing outdoor spaces.
Preparation isn’t just about safety; it’s about giving yourself confidence and control when the weather turns.
