RACE TO THE RESCUE "There have been Herculean efforts to try to rescue some of the coral that's most at risk," said Ben Kirtman, director of the University of Miami-NOAA Cooperative Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Studies and an atmospheric sciences professor in the Rosenstiel School of Marine, Atmospheric, and Earth Science.

More than a half dozen research organizations, universities and government agencies launched emergency efforts to salvage fragments of rare and threatened corals they're growing in manmade coral nurseries off the Florida Keys, rushing them to deeper water and land-based laboratories. The groups included Mote, the Keys Marine Lab, the University of South Florida and the Coral Restoration Foundation.

Scientists working in the Florida Keys are undertaking a landmark restoration project to save what little coral reef is left after hurricanes, overfishing an...

We love our beach days so much, chilling with a margarita soaking some sun... The best ever! And if we want to keep it up, we must keep the beach clean.

'In its second year, the Underwater Photography Contest has already put itself on the map as a prestigious international competition. This year, the contest drew thousands of applicants, who vied for awards in eight photo categories, including macro, wide-angle, behavior, and more. In addition, four special awards recognized exceptional photographers, and up-and-coming talent, both in the UK and internationally.'
