🦋🪰🦇 Happy Pollinator Week! 🪰🦇🦋

Photographed here is the Martial Scrub-Hairstreak butterfly, an important native pollinator in Key Largo. This butterfly is on its host plant, Bay Cedar.

Pollinators are essential to our ecosystems because they move pollen between plants. Butterflies sip nectar from plants and the pollen sticks to their legs. When they go to another plant to sip nectar, they transfer pollen!!

What’s your favorite pollinator?

On , we pause to reflect on the lives lost when the illegal slave ship Guerrero was shipwrecked on the reef off the coast of Key Largo in 1827. Guerrero carried 561 enslaved Africans. Forty-one people drowned in the wreckage, while those who survived faced incredible hardship. Learn more about the Guerrero and other shipwrecks in our waters at our maritime heritage exhibit in the Visitor Center.

Volunteer Appreciation!

Janie and Tony Mayfield began volunteering for the Florida Park Service at John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park in August of 2024. They were exemplary campground hosts and were nominated for a volunteer team of the year award for 2024 with another couple. After also volunteering at Jonathan Dickinson and Bahia Honda State Parks, they returned to Pennekamp in April 2026. Janie was awarded for 1,000 hours of service and Tony for 250 hours in April 2026. (Tony was still working when they began volunteering but is now volunteering full-time.)

🐊 Happy World Croc Day! 🐊

Key Largo, along with other areas of the Keys and South Florida, is home to the American crocodile! Crocs thrive in mangrove swamps and saltwater lagoons.

To tell the difference between a crocodile and alligator, you can look at how the snouts differ. A crocodile has a V-shaped mouth and an alligator has a U-shaped mouth.

To do your part to protect these creatures, always maintain a safe distance from them and refrain from feeding or touching crocodiles in any way. They are an important part of Key Largo and we want to keep them safe!

🐢 Happy National Sea Turtle Day! 🐢

Although we don’t get nesting sea turtles on our beaches, you can find them in our parks waters! Whether they’re resting in the reef, munching on jellies, or just drifting with the currents, they can be spotted in the park. One way to help the turtles is by keeping our waters clean and free of trash, as well as following safe boating practices!

Happy sea turtle day! 💚

Our volunteers are always up to amazing things!

Volunteer Carlene Shedd worked at the John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park ranger station as a toll collector in April and May 2026. While here, she started painting and was working on a theme of “the Trees of Pennekamp.” Thank you for capturing the beauty of Florida State Parks!
