We asked a few rangers what their walk out song would be and they did not disappoint!

A piece of Key Largo history has been restored at Dagny Johnson Key Largo Hammock Botanical State Park. More than 40 years after the property was slated to become the massive Port Bougainville development, the historic entrance archway still stands as a reminder of what might have been. When its roof fell into disrepair, a $44,000 capital grant from the Monroe County Tourist Development Council helped make its restoration possible. The project was completed for less than $20,000.

Today, the land once planned for thousands of residences, hotels, shops and a marina is protected as a Florida State Park. Dagny Johnson preserves critical habitat for 84 listed or protected species of plants and animals, along with one of the largest remaining tracts of West Indian tropical hardwood hammock in the United States.

Investments like this help preserve the places and stories that make the Florida Keys distinctive, while protecting them for the community and those who come to experience them.

September 1–7 is Zero Waste Week. A pretty good reason to leave the park a little better than you found it. Next time you’re at John Pennekamp, grab a bucket and picker from one of the park’s litter stations and help clean up what the tide leaves behind. A little help goes a long way. 🌿♻️

The September 2026 park programs are here! We have lots of fun things planned this coming month, including Pennekamp Paddle Day! This day is a Florida Keys celebration of America's 250th anniversary - including free park admission, free paddlesport rentals, free boat tours, and free lunch! This event will run from 11 AM to 4 PM on September 12th, and everything will be first-come, first-serve.

A week after the festivities, we will be hosting a marine debris cleanup at the Ocean Forest Restoration Site to celebrate International Coastal CleanUp Day for anyone that wants to give back and help protect our shorelines in need.

There's always plenty to do at the park, and we hope to see you here!
