πŸŒ€ 2026 Hurricane Season Starts June 1 β€” Are You Ready?

The Atlantic hurricane season is just around the corner, and here in the Florida Keys, we know better than most what Mother Nature can bring. Your neighbors at Key Largo Fire Department want you to have the best chance of staying safe this season.

Here's a quick checklist to get your household prepared:

βœ… Stock supplies β€” at least 7 days of water (1 gallon/person/day), non-perishable food, medications, flashlights, and batteries

βœ… Build your go-bag β€” important documents, cash, phone chargers, and a change of clothes ready to grab in minutes

βœ… Know your evacuation zone β€” the Florida Keys has a mandatory evacuation plan. Know your zone (A–E) and have your route planned before the storm

βœ… Secure your property β€” install hurricane shutters or have plywood ready; bring in or secure outdoor furniture and valuables

βœ… Register for alerts β€” sign up for Monroe County emergency notifications at monroecounty-fl.gov

βœ… Check on your neighbors β€” especially elderly residents, those with disabilities, and those with pets

When an evacuation order is issued β€” go early. Our roads become dangerously congested and our crews need to be positioned to protect the community. The best thing you can do for yourself and for us is to leave ahead of the storm.

As always, Key Largo Fire Department is here for you. Stay prepared, stay safe, and look out for each other. πŸ”΄πŸ”΅

πŸš’πŸ‘¨β€πŸŽ“The Key Largo Fire Department had the pleasure of participating in the Miami Dade College Fire Services Career Fair. There was a phenomenal turn out of past and current students at the event, as well as a strong showing from our brothers and sisters from our neighboring departments.

It was truly amazing to meet and interact with all of the future Fire-Rescue personnel that are eager and ready to become part of the Fire Service Family.

Thank you to Miami Dade College for giving us the opportunity to make long lasting connections with your students.

πŸ”₯ WILDFIRE SMOKE ADVISORY – KEY LARGO & SURROUNDING COMMUNITIES πŸ”₯

Key Largo Fire Department wants to keep our community informed about the ongoing wildfire activity affecting South Florida.

The 172nd Avenue Fire, burning near Florida City in southern Miami-Dade County, has scorched approximately 300 acres and remains partially contained. This fire previously caused temporary closures of Card Sound Road, restricting access to and from the Florida Keys. While the road has reopened, drivers should continue to use caution as heavy smoke may still reduce visibility along the corridor.

Additionally, the Max Road Fire in western Broward County has burned over 11,000 acres in the Everglades and continues to impact air quality across South Florida.

⚠️ What you should know:

Smoke and reduced visibility may affect driving conditions on US-1 and Card Sound Road

Air quality is significantly impacted β€” limit time outdoors when possible

Residents with respiratory conditions, the elderly, and children are especially vulnerable to smoke exposure

Keep windows and doors closed and set your A/C to recirculate mode

The Florida Forest Service and local fire agencies are actively working containment operations. We are monitoring conditions closely and will share updates as they become available.

Stay weather-aware, stay safe, and look out for your neighbors. πŸ™

⚑ May is National Electrical Safety Month ⚑

The Key Largo Fire Department is proud to recognize National Electrical Safety Month and help raise awareness about preventing electrical fires and injuries in our community.

Electricity powers our everyday livesβ€”but when used improperly, it can become dangerous. Here are a few important safety tips to help protect your home and family:

πŸ”Œ Avoid overloading outlets and power strips

πŸ”Œ Replace frayed or damaged cords immediately

πŸ”Œ Keep electrical devices away from water

πŸ”Œ Use extension cords only as a temporary solution

πŸ”Œ Have a qualified professional inspect outdated wiring

🌴 Living in the Keys brings some unique electrical safety considerations:

⚑ When charging golf carts or electric vehicles, always use manufacturer-approved chargers and avoid using extension cords

⚑ Charge batteries in well-ventilated areas and keep them away from flammable materials

⚑ For boats, ensure shore power connections are secure and in good condition to prevent electrical hazards at the dock

⚑ Regularly inspect cords and connections for corrosion caused by our saltwater environment

A few simple precautions can go a long way in preventing fires and keeping your property safe.

πŸ”‹ BATTERY SAFETY REMINDER from Key Largo Fire Department! πŸ”₯

Did you know that 9-volt batteries β€” the ones powering your smoke alarms and household devices β€” can actually START a fire if stored or disposed of incorrectly?

Here's what you need to know:

βœ… Keep them in their original packaging until ready to use
βœ… If loose, cover the posts with masking, duct, or electrical tape
βœ… Store them upright and away from metal objects
βœ… Never toss them in a drawer with coins, paper clips, keys, or other batteries

🚫 Do NOT throw 9-volt batteries in the trash β€” even weak batteries can cause fires when they contact metal. Take them to a household hazardous waste collection site instead.

A small habit can prevent a big fire. Share this with your family and neighbors! 🏠
