KEYS REBATE PROGRAM OFFERS SAVINGS

Keys Energy Services (KEYS) rebate program helps customers save energy and money when purchasing qualifying energy-efficient products.

The program consists of 14 rebates, including a $350 rebate for an electric vehicle (EV) charger, with an additional $50 rebate if the charger is Energy Star Certified.

Additional rebates include: Hot Water Heater Timer ($25); Programmable Thermostat ($25); Ceiling Fan ($25); White Roof Coating ($25); Dehumidifier ($50); Dishwasher ($55); Room Air Conditioner ($75); Refrigerator ($75); Clothes Washer ($100); Duct Leak Repair or Replacement ($150); Ductless Air Conditioner ($175); Central Air Conditioner ($250); and Solar Hot Water Heater ($450).

Customers can visit KeysEnergy.com to learn more about the program and download a rebate application. The terms of the rebate program allow customers to receive more than one rebate within a designated timeframe.

Rebates are awarded to eligible customers on a first-come, first-served basis and will be available until funding is exhausted. Since 2008, KEYS has provided more than $1.4 million in rebates to customers.

In an organizational meeting during a regularly scheduled Utility Board meeting on Wednesday, September 9, the Board appointed Pat Labrada to serve as its Chair and Mona C. Clark to serve as Vice Chair. Labrada has served on the Board since 2020, and Clark has served on the Board since 2004.

During the same meeting the Board also held a public hearing and approved Keys Energy Services’ (KEYS) Fiscal Year* (FY) 2027 budget and five-year financial plan. The approved FY 2027 budget for KEYS totals $127.2 million.

This budget supports KEYS’ strategic goals and objectives, which include an emphasis on storm hardening and maintaining reliability of the transmission, distribution, and generation facilities.

As a result of the approved budget, effective January 1, 2027, an average residential customer, consuming 1,215 kilowatt-hours** (kWh) of energy per month, will see their bill go from $185.75 to $187.74, a 1.1-percent increase.

In other business, the Board:
• Approved the renewal of Property, General Liability, Automobile Liability, Physical Damage Comprehensive and Collision, and Workers’ Compensation insurance with Preferred Governmental Insurance Trust, administered by Public Risk Underwriters, Inc., in the amount of $624,603.
• Approved the unit price purchase of 105 ductile iron poles for inventory stock and the storm hardening distribution pole replacement project from GHMR/McWane Poles in the total estimated amount of $575,650.
• Awarded the contract for the replacement of the Computer Room Air Conditioner units to Gibson Air Conditioning & Refrigeration, LLC in the amount of $395,010. The units have reached end of life and replacement is required for maintaining the precise temperature and humidity required for reliable operation of data center equipment.
• Awarded the unit price contract for pole inspections to Osmose Utilities Services, Inc., in the estimated amount of $245,763. The scope of the contract includes the visual inspection and supplemental sounding and boring of all distribution poles North of Shark Key in 2027. In 2006, the Florida Public Service Commission mandated that investor-owned utilities inspect distribution poles every eight years. KEYS adopted the same inspection cycle as a best practice. KEYS last inspected all distribution poles North of Shark Key in 2020, and all poles from Shark Key South in 2023.

The regular meeting of the Utility Board took place in the Utility Board Room of KEYS’ Service Building at 1001 James Street, Key West at 4:00 p.m., on Wednesday, September 9.

*KEYS’ Fiscal Year runs from October 1 to September 30.
** Kilowatt (kWh) – a measure of electrical energy equivalent to a power consumption of 1,000 watts for 1 hour.

PARRA NAMED OUTSTANDING EMPLOYEE OF THE THIRD QUARTER

Kaylee Parra has been named Keys Energy Services’ (KEYS) Outstanding Employee of the Third Quarter for 2026.

Parra has worked for the Utility since 2022 and currently serves as a Customer Services Representative II within the Customer Services department. In her post she is responsible for implementing customer services policies and procedures to meet customer needs and support the business objectives of KEYS.

Reflecting on her favorite part of KEYS, Parra said, “KEYS provides opportunities for growth and values community involvement.” Parra was born and raised in Key West and graduated from Key West High School. She earned her Associate of Arts degree from the College of the Florida Keys. In her spare time she enjoys “spending time with friends and family, going to Disney World, and going out for coffee.”

The Employee of the Quarter Committee selects an employee four times a year for this award. Employees are considered for the award after being nominated by their peers. Final selection of the outstanding employee is based on several factors, which include attendance, attitude, efficiency, initiative, and job performance.

A Distribution Line outage affected approximately 1,200 KEYS’ customers in the Old Town section of Key West Saturday evening. The outage was triggered at 7:10P. Power was restored to affected customers by 8:09P. The cause of this outage was attributed to trees striking power lines near the corner of Southard and Margaret streets.
