SOS Foundation

SOS Foundation Having operated a 365-day per year soup kitchen in Key West for over 39 years, we became acutely aware of the epidemic of hunger in our community.

We are a non-profit that is committed to enhancing the lives of low-income families in Monroe County through our food pantries, nutrition education program, and community kitchen. Our goal at the Star of the Sea Foundation (SOS) is simple: increase the health and well-being of low-income individuals and families in Monroe County, Florida. The Star of the Sea Outreach Mission (SOS) was founded in 2

006 as a client-choice food pantry that aims to enhance the health of our community by providing fresh produce and nutritious foods to the working-poor in Monroe County, Florida. We responded to this problem with a food pantry that has since grown to be one of the largest in all of South Florida. In the early days of operation, we distributed pre-selected bags of canned and packaged items, although we quickly realized this system was not sensitive to individual’s cultural or dietary needs. SOS now operates a client-choice food pantry, and much like at a traditional grocery store, clients are allowed to select foods their families need. This in turn, leads to not only more satisfied customers but also a reduction in food waste. As one of the largest pantries in South Florida, SOS currently distributes fresh produce, meats, dairy products, breads, and canned goods to over 9,000 unduplicated individuals each year as well as 35 different agencies that serve children, veterans, seniors, and the homeless. Utilizing primarily volunteer support, SOS distributes 1,500,000 pounds of food annually to these underserved populations. As nutrition and healthy eating are both key focuses of our organization, more than 50% of the food we distribute is fresh produce. And recently SOS has expanded its efforts with helping the community through the community kitchen and nutrition education programs. Executive Director: Thomas M. Callahan

We would be incredibly grateful for your nomination for Key West's Best Non-Profit of 2026 for the Bubbas Awards!!

As Monroe County's largest hunger relief organization, the SOS Foundation works every day to strengthen our community through hunger relief, nutrition education, and food access programs. From educating more than 200 students each year through our nutrition programs to the countless hours spent serving families through our SOS Stock Island Food Pantry and SOS Callahan Community Kitchen, our team is committed to making a difference across the Keys.

Last year alone, we prepared more than 80,000 meals and distributed over 1.3 million pounds of food to neighbors in need. None of this would be possible without the support of our incredible community.

If our mission has touched your life, inspired you, or made a difference in our community, we would be honored to have your nomination. You can nominate the SOS Foundation once per day through June 21st.

We made it through Week 3 with our Shop Smart, Save Big clients in partnership with Keys Health & Housing! This 7-week series focuses on nutrition education, healthy lifestyle habits, budgeting, and learning how to shop smarter at the grocery store to get the best value for your money.

One of the highlights of the program is getting to host two hands-on cooking classes with these wonderful ladies! During this class, we focused on cross-utilizing ingredients to reduce food waste and stretch grocery dollars further. We used our fresh vegetables to create a delicious Asian stir-fry and then transformed the remaining ingredients into flavorful chicken fajitas.

Our goal was to show that leftover ingredients don't have to go to waste, they can easily be saved and incorporated into future lunches or dinners, helping families make the most of their food budget while creating healthy, nutritious meals.

This class was so much fun, and we can't wait for the next one! 💚🍅🥕

As summer begins, we officially wrapped up our Smart Sprouts spring semester this past week with a special field trip to our SOS Eco Farm! Students had the opportunity to see firsthand how our aeroponic towers work, explore everything we’re growing for the summer season, and learn about the unique barriers of farming in the Keys.

To top it all off, students enjoyed a farm-to-table experience where they harvested fresh basil and bell peppers straight from the farm to create a delicious basil hummus, an instant favorite!

It has been such a rewarding semester watching our students learn, grow, and build confidence in the classroom and beyond. We are so proud of all they’ve accomplished and can’t wait to see what next school year brings!
