Key West is compact in size and that makes getting around by bicycle, walking and transit quick, safe and convenient. Census American Community Survey (ACS) 20% of Key West residents bike to work. Another 10% walk. That’s great! But we can do more to make it even easier and safer for more of us to do so. Key West doesn’t have enough space for everyone who lives, works and visits here to get around
by car. Making Key West easier to get around by bicycle, walking and transit, makes us more healthy, sustainable, happy and prosperous. And it makes it easier for those who use cars to do so. Car-Free Key West is a program to help make it easy and safer for more people to bike, walk and use transit more often. Car-Free Key West is a program of the City of Key West’s Engineering Department. As we reach for a Key West that is easier and safer to bike and walk in, Car-Free Key West hopes to combine the efforts of many – from moms and dads advocating for safe routes to schools, to City staff building safer streets, trails and intersections, to business owners helping their employees, customers and guests access their places of business without a car, to Police Officers helping all of us share our streets safely. It is going to take lots of people to make the goal of Key West as one of the most bike/walk friendly communities in the nation a reality.
