Over the past hour or so, we've had a drastic increase in cloud cover across the Lower and Middle Keys! Looking at GOES-19 visible satellite imagery, with lightning detection overlaid, we can see the culprit is convection over mainland Florida.

The anvil cloud, essentially the "top" of the thunderstorm, is spread out by upper level winds. Thunderstorms bubbling over South Florida will share their anvil cloud with portions of the Keys & nearby waters. While this may make the skies look a little menacing, anvil clouds don't really mean much for our local weather. They're too high up to encourage convection, and blocking some of the sunlight may take the edge off of some of the heat.
