You have found the Old Coca Cola Blottling plant at 105 simonton st Key West Fla! Coke was made here and had giant cisterns in the back to hold the water to make the product. They collect rain water after the train was destroyed in the 1935 hurricane . Key West was the second factory following Atlanta. Key West being a huge port could make and ship out lots of the product. Brenda Jenkins Stevens - “If you looked through the window of the Coca Cola bottling plant in the 50's or 60's, you probably saw my mother. She was one of the inspectors on the bottling line. As the bottles came out of the bottle washer, they would go on a conveyor belt. My mom sat in a chair in front of a bright white light and as the bottles would go by, she would remove the ones that were still dirty. The bottles would then be filled with Coke and the bottles capped. They would continue on the conveyor belt and another inspector, sitting in front of a red light, would remove any bottles that looked dirty after being filled. The bottles would then be dropped into the wooden cases. I had many just-filled Cokes off that conveyor belt when I would go see my Mom at the Coca Cola plant. After they stopped bottling Cokes there, my Mom worked in the office until the early 70's”
Many stories like this tell a great history of Jobs, people and and era that’s gone by. In 2013 The First Legal Rum Distillery was opened and many treasures were found underneath the ground to help keep the history alive. You could say said one person “ Key West goes well with Coke” and now with Legal Rum added to the Coke we feel that all this was “Perfected in Paradise”!
