Sustaining our warfighting advantage requires a dedicated team of experts committed to Fleet readiness. Among these experts is James Husted, a longtime engineering technician at Naval Undersea Warfare Center Division, Keyport. Over his two decades so far at the command, he has distinguished himself as an exceptionally capable, versatile, mission-driven team player.

“He has a good depth of knowledge for the various resources that we have at Keyport, and he can collaborate in order to leverage that knowledge to increase efficiency,” said his supervisor. “He's got a good knowledge of other programs that have overlapping objectives at Keyport and is able to seamlessly engage those to support good overall production.”

A coworker added, “What I appreciate most about working with James is his focus on mission success. If he says he’s going to get it done, it might as well be done. He carries a full plate, and it always seems like he makes room for anything that he deems worthy and important to support the warfighter. It's inspiring.”

James is originally from the Detroit area but grew up in the small town of Rapid City, Michigan. The son of an Army veteran and grandson of an Army Air Corps veteran, James knew from an early age he wanted to serve. After finishing high school, he enlisted in the Navy as an avionics technician and went on to serve for eight years, leaving the Navy in 1996 as a petty officer second class (E-5).

Following his military service, James moved to Washington State and worked in the medical device industry for several years. In 2001, he began working as a contractor at Keyport, performing submarine installations and performing bottom recovery operations.

His civil service career at Keyport began in 2006, and since then he has become an institution at the command. He has worked across many departments and continually sought to expand his expertise into new undersea domains.

Through his efforts to ensure our torpedoes are rigorously evaluated and ready for combat, James directly supports the first and second Naval Sea Systems Command Enterprise Strategy Lines of Effort: “Accelerate Force Generation” and “Generate Readiness.”

Outside of work, James enjoys hunting, fishing, motorcycling, ham radio, and spending time with his wife and children.

Among these experts is NUWC Division, Keyport Supply Systems Analyst Edward Villegas, known for his strong work ethic, attention to detail, growth mindset and commitment to the success of his team.

“Edward stands out for his exceptional initiative and a strong desire to learn,” said his supervisor. “He is consistently eager to assist his colleagues. His proactive and helpful attitude, combined with his enthusiasm for taking on new challenges, makes him a valuable asset to Keyport.”

A coworker added, “He shows up to work every day with a great attitude and an eagerness to achieve. Whether it’s being boots on the ground in the warehouse for material or learning a new job tasking altogether, he does it with a positive attitude and he does it properly the first time. Edward’s attention to detail helps ensure anything he works on will be completed accurately and efficiently.”

Edward was born and raised in San Lorenzo, California. After finishing high school, he worked for a year in Silicon Valley, helping develop some early artificial intelligence models. Following in the footsteps of his grandfather, who had been an airborne Ranger in the Korean War, he then decided to enlist in the military. He went on to serve five years in the Navy as an airman aboard USS Nimitz (CVN 68).

For the next four years, Edward worked as a logistics analyst and lead warehouse specialist contactor at Keyport. In 2024, he began working as a Keyport civilian, first as a supply technician and then as a supply systems analyst.

Edward's work in inventory management and supply systems analysis directly supports the second and third Naval Sea Systems Command Enterprise Strategy lines of effort: “Generate Readiness” and “Generate, Capture, and Use Data.”

Outside of work, Edward enjoys spending time with his wife of nearly ten years, their two boys, two dogs and five chickens. He is also an avid cook, a foodie, a San Francisco 49ers fan and a coffee “fiend.”

Sustaining our warfighting advantage requires a dedicated team of experts committed to Fleet readiness. Among these experts is Mechanical Engineer Jonathan Heier. During his two years so far at Keyport, Jonathan has distinguished himself as an exceptionally capable, versatile, personable team player with a knack for additive manufacturing.

“I've been impressed not just with his expertise in additive manufacturing, but his overall approach to helping customers,” said his supervisor. “He'll consult with them, and it's a very collaborative back-and-forth process. He’s able to scale his communications up and down to help people who are completely unfamiliar with additive manufacturing, but then he can get very technical. He's a good-humored person and definitely a morale booster to the whole team.”

Jonathan’s former supervisor added, “He is detailed, organized and communicates quite well. He is very persuasive without coming across as arrogant. He definitely has the respect, both professionally and personally, of all the people I see him interact with.”

Jonathan grew up in Ridgecrest, California. Working on household projects with his two grandfathers—one a career Navy captain and the other a master tool and die maker—instilled in him a love of tinkering from a young age. He came to enjoy modifying go-karts and building Rube Goldberg machines for his high school engineering class.

“That was the kickoff for me of just doing stuff with my hands,” said Jonathan. “I started building and programming stuff, and at that point I was really fascinated with the engineering side. That’s what solidified going down the engineering path for me.”

After finishing high school, Jonathan earned a Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering and a Master of Science in advanced manufacturing from the Colorado School of Mines. He then became a mechanical engineer at Naval Air Warfare Center Weapons Division China Lake, doing production planning and additive manufacturing.

In 2024, Jonathan began his current position at Keyport, where he helped the command become the first Warfare Center to achieve a Naval Sea Systems Command Additive Manufacturing Technical Publication qualification for organic metal printing.

Through his 3D printing and reverse engineering work, Jonathan directly supports the second and third Naval Sea Systems Command Enterprise Strategy lines of effort: “Generate Readiness” and “Generate, Capture, and Use Data.”

Outside of work, Jonathan enjoys rock climbing, skiing, mountain biking and exploring nature in his off-roading truck.
