We celebrated our 100,000th member account in March 1990. Today, 200,000 accounts represent homes and businesses across 15 North Florida counties.

Florida is no stranger to hurricanes, and this season’s first Atlantic hurricane came ashore in the Panhandle. While Hurricane Isaias made landfall well west of Clay Electric’s service area, our neighbors in the Panhandle needed help.

Our 17-person crew assisting Choctawhatchee Electric Cooperative, Inc. was released Wednesday and returned home after helping restore power where outages peaked at more than 70,000 member accounts. In all, Clay Electric sent 31 employees to assist the region, including another crew, not pictured, that helped Talquin Electric Cooperative.

Cooperation among cooperatives is one of our guiding principles, and mutual aid is a practical example. Sharing crews and equipment helps co-ops restore power faster. When a storm leaves Clay Electric members needing that same help, we can call on that network to bring additional crews here.

As fall temperatures fluctuate, your thermostat settings can make a big difference on energy bills. On cooler days, lower the thermostat… and raise it during days that are warmer. On milder days, consider turning off your heating/cooling system altogether. A smart thermostat is also convenient for making temperature adjustments––and saving energy––even easier. Fall is the perfect time to check for drafts around windows and doors––before cooler weather arrives. A little weatherstripping and caulk can help keep conditioned air indoors while improving efficiency and overall comfort.

Kaleena Feng and her friends spent part of their day at our Orange Park District Office packing bags with supplies for people experiencing homelessness as part of her Unto Me Initiative.

The Oakleaf High School student represented Clay Electric on Youth Tour and serves as Florida’s 2026 Youth Leadership Council representative. Her service project collected enough clothing and personal care items to fill well over 100 bags, helping people meet basic needs.

October is Co-op Month, and Kaleena’s work is a fitting example of Concern for Community, one of the seven cooperative principles.

Clay Electric has sent 17 employees to the Florida Panhandle to assist Choctawhatchee Electric Cooperative (CHELCO) with power restoration following Hurricane Isaias.

Cooperation Among Cooperatives is one of the seven cooperative principles, and it’s especially important in times of need.

We’re proud to support our fellow co-op and its members during the restoration effort. We wish everyone working to restore power a safe and successful recovery.
