The little bit of rain we experienced this weekend almost felt helpful. You may have even thought, “Hey, maybe I can finally burn that brush pile?"

Yeah, about that. . .

Here’s the deal:
🚫 Kill Devil Hills does NOT allow open burning. Ever. (Yes, even that small pile. Even just for a minute.)
🚫 On top of that, the N.C. Forest Service has issued a statewide burn ban and cancelled all burning permits until further notice.

And while we appreciated the light rain this weekend, it didn’t do much to fix the ongoing dry conditions. (Just to be absolutely clear, the Town's no open burning rule is always in effect, rain or shine.)

🔥 Why this matters:
Dry conditions + open flames = fast-moving fires. That puts you, your home, your neighbors, and our firefighters at serious risk.

🚒 What you can do instead:
✔ Dispose of waste through approved methods
✔ Ensure anything capable of igniting a fire is properly stored, secured, and closely supervised at all times

We appreciate everyone doing their part to keep our Town safe!

Happy Earth Day! 🌎

Today is a reminder that small actions matter, and when we come together, those small actions turn into something powerful.

Help us celebrate Earth Day this Saturday, April 25, with two events:

📖 KDH StoryWalk Ribbon Cutting: Start a new chapter and join us for the ribbon-cutting of our new StoryWalk featuring “My First Earth Day.” It’s a chance to walk, read, and connect with nature and with each other.

♻ 2026 Trash Attack! Event : Make a difference you can see and be part of Trash Attack!, our community-wide clean-up event. Every bag filled is a step toward a cleaner, greener Kill Devil Hills. (A link to register can be found in the comments.)

Let’s leave Earth Day with more than good intentions; let’s leave it with results. This Saturday, bring a friend, bring your family, invite a neighbor, and be a part of what makes KDH so special! 💙

Reminder: The beach driving season in Kill Devil Hills ends on April 30, 30 minutes after sunset. (Beach driving is only allowed with the proper permit.)

As we enjoy the last few days of beach driving, remember that our beaches are becoming more populated. Drivers: pay close attention to pedestrians, including fishermen and sunbathers, wildlife, the water, and all other surroundings. Beach pedestrians always have the right-of-way. The speed limit is 15 mph.

Before driving onto the beach, check to verify that the access onto the beach is clear of pedestrians, vehicles, or other obstacles.

Remember to air down your tires before you drive onto the sand. It’s recommended to air down to 20 psi or even 15, should conditions warrant. (Always check the manufacturer’s recommendations for your vehicle.) The softer the sand, the lower the pressure needed for better traction.

The weather can change quickly here. Always check the weather forecasts and tide tables before venturing out.
