💧 May is National Water Safety Month 💧

As we head into warmer weather, the Killingworth Volunteer Fire Company wants to remind everyone that water safety saves lives.

🚨 Did you know:
• Drowning is the leading cause of death for children ages 1–4 in the U.S.
• There are over 4,000 drowning deaths every year — about 11 per day
• Drowning is often silent and can happen in seconds

✅ Simple steps to stay safe:
• Always supervise children around water — even for a moment
• Never swim alone
• Wear a life jacket when boating or in open water
• Learn CPR — it can make the difference in an emergency
• Consider swim lessons for all ages

🌊 Know Your Local Waters:
Killingworth and the surrounding area offer many beautiful places to enjoy the water, including Chatfield Hollow State Park, nearby lakes, ponds, rivers, and access to the Connecticut River and Long Island Sound. While these areas are great for recreation, conditions can change quickly — always be aware of water depth, currents, and weather, and use caution when swimming or boating.

🏊 Helpful resources:
• Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Water Safety: https://www.cdc.gov/drowning/
• American Red Cross Water Safety Tips: https://www.redcross.org
• Find local CPR classes near you: https://www.redcross.org/take-a-class/cpr

As your local fire department, we respond when emergencies happen — but prevention starts with all of us.

Stay safe, stay alert, and help us keep our community protected this summer. 🚒

🚨🚒 IMPORTANT DEPARTMENT ANNOUNCEMENT🚨🚒
The Killingworth Fire Department is proud to announce the addition of our newest specialized unit… the Rapid Response Goat Team (R.R.G.T.) 🐐🔥
After extensive research, we’ve determined goats are highly effective at:
• Clearing brush around water holes 🌿
• Providing emotional support on long calls ❤️
• Detecting snacks within a 500 ft radius 🍪
Our first responder goat, Chief Nibbles, will be on duty starting today. Please do not be alarmed if you see him riding shotgun on Engine 1 or attempting to climb the ladders. He is fully certified (in spirit).
Residents are encouraged to report any sightings of Chief Nibbles… especially near unattended gardens.
Stay safe, Killingworth — and remember: If you smell smoke, call us and If you see a goat wearing our gear, probably still call us…

🚨🌨️ Storm Update from Killingworth Fire Department 🌨️🚨

A significant winter storm is moving into our area, bringing heavy snow, strong winds, and dangerous travel conditions. We want to share a few important reminders to help keep everyone safe.

Please Stay Off the Roads

If you do not absolutely need to travel, stay home. Snow-covered roads, drifting, and low visibility create hazardous conditions — and every unnecessary vehicle on the road makes it harder for plows and emergency crews to get where they’re needed. Keeping the roads clear truly helps us help you.

Generator & Carbon Monoxide Safety

Power outages are possible during this storm. If you plan to use a generator:

• Never run it inside your home, garage, or any enclosed space — even if doors or windows are open.
• Keep it well away from your house, with exhaust pointed away from doors and windows.
• Make sure your carbon monoxide (CO) alarms are working properly.
• Never plug a generator directly into a household outlet.
• Allow it to cool before refueling.

Carbon monoxide is invisible and odorless. If you feel dizzy, nauseous, or lightheaded — or if your CO alarm activates — get outside to fresh air immediately and call 911.

Important Reminder About Water Supply in Killingworth

Unlike many towns, Killingworth does not have fire hydrants. We rely on designated water holes located throughout town for fire suppression.

You’ll recognize them by a white sign with a blue “W.”

If you live near one of these locations, we sincerely appreciate any help keeping them clear of snow during and after the storm. Quick access to these water sources can make a critical difference — minutes truly matter in an emergency.

We will be ready to respond throughout the storm. In the meantime, the best thing you can do is prepare, stay home, and check on neighbors who may need assistance.

Stay safe, Killingworth
