Northumberland Preservation Inc.

Northumberland Preservation Inc. NPI was incorporated in 1993 and has since worked on a number of historical preservation projects in Northumberland County, VA. Please join us this year.

NPI is a local nonprofit, educational charity. We are totally dependent on contributions through membership dues (basic - $15/person and $25 for families). Additionally, donations of money, volunteer time and talent are essential to meet operational, program and restoration/maintenance expenses. Without your contribution, these historical sites will be lost. All gifts are tax-deductible. NPI was i

ncorporated in 1983 and has since worked on a number of historical preservation projects in Northumberland County, VA. NPI has worked successfully with the Virginia Dept. of Transportation ("VDOT") in identifying and initially researching potential Northumberland County sites to receive an historical highway marker. These familiar silver and black highway plaques are a very popular part of driving in Virginia...

Since 1986, NPI has taken on the restoration and maintenance of the Shiloh School House(s). Located in Ball's Neck between Kilmarnock and Wicomico Church, Virginia, Shiloh School is a rare survival of the simple rural schools once plentiful throughout Virginia. On display are two separate school houses. The original was built in 1884 and wasn't discovered and identified, just a half mile down the road from where its successor stands, until about 2009. On November 30, 2010, it was moved to its current spot right next to its replacement. The original school operated until the successor school was built in 1906. The 1906 School is an axial-fronted frame building that, along with its rural setting, has been little altered in the years since its construction. This school was used between 1906 and 1929

Officially known as Public School #8, Shiloh School, was built of lumber cut and milled on the Diller Farm in the summer of 1906 by local men whose children would be educated there. One of the unusual features of the school is its side gabled structure and the exterior style construction of its interior chimney. The school is clad in pine weatherboard and has the metal clad roof common in the early 1900s. Shiloh School served the children of the area until it was replaced by a new, larger school at Wicomico Church in 1929. From then until it was given to NPI in 1987 by James and Emily Hudnall, the old school was used as a farm storage building.

Please enjoy our 2024 Spring Newsletter. We are trying to hit our goal of raising $4,000 this fund raising season, in order to finish the the new flooring in the original 1884 Schoolhouse as well as some very needed maintenance on the 1906 Schoolhouse. We continue to invite the community to use our facilities for picnics, concerts, lectures and more. There is a utility building which also houses a kitchen, bathroom and storage if your event requires such ammenities. Please have a look and contact us with any and all questions.

Here is a wonderful recording of an interview from 1990. Helen Lee Fletcher, then a member of NPI's Board, interviewing Mrs. Addie Bell Diller Harding, who was a 1906 student in the newly built (second) Shiloh School. Her teacher then, was of course Jesse Ball (...later to become Mrs. Alfred I. Du Pont).

Have a listen and let us know what you think. Also please have a look at this Spring's Newsletter and if you like what you see, please dig deep and join Northumberland Preservation Inc's ("NPI") Guardianship of these wonderful Historic Landmarks. (Copy & Paste)

We are trying to rebuild the robust interest we had in the Astronomy Club, prior to COVID. Last month we sent out the attached flyer, introducing Belle Isle State Park's Dark Sky Series of Moon Parties. The first one was this past week to be followed on April 22nd for the second part of the series. Retired NASA engineer and scientist Brad Perry will lead a discussion about Stellar Astronomy at 7:30 pm at the BISP Visitor's Center

For those interested in Astronomy or for those who want to learn more about it and have some fun at the same time, we are organizing a viewing party the night before the Belle Isle event at the Shiloh School, to test out some telescopes and prepare for the following evening's Moon Party. This event will start at 7:30 pm on Friday April 21st. We want to encourage everyone interested in learning more about Astronomy to come join us for both nights. If you can only make one evening, that is also fine as our objective is to have many more events, which will be interesting to people of all ages. Bring your telescope if you have one, but there will be plenty to share as well.

If you have interest in learning more about this and other Shiloh School Astonomy events, please contact us below:

Shiloh School native plant garden is among area’s hidden treasures

The historic Shiloh School site offers visitors a thriving native plant garden.

“The garden is still a work in progress and is a little off the beaten path, but the butterflies, bees and other pollinators have found it,” said Jack Moore, president of Northumberland Preservation Inc. (NPI).

“During the annual National Butterfly Count, local volunteers make a beeline, so to speak, for this garden and its variety of butterflies,” said Moore.

Many identifying plant markers are in place, thanks to a generous donation from the Northern Neck Native Plant Society. Approximately 40 species of plants native to the coastal plain of Virginia are in the garden. Accustomed to our climate, they survive better than cultivated plants and are favored by native pollinators.

These plants would have been familiar to the children who attended the Shiloh School, he added.

The Shiloh School, erected in 1906, and its “mother” school (1884) welcome visitors, and in recent years, the 1906 school has hosted community programs.

“In the future, we hope to erect a kiosk at the site to describe both the schools and the garden,” said NPI board member Camille Grabb. “If anyone would like to help with this project, please let Jack Moore know (580-8629).”

The flowering plants were selected to bloom at different points in the growing season so the garden looks different every few weeks. The schools and garden are located on Shiloh School Road off Jessie duPont Memorial Highway between Wicomico Church and Kilmarnock.

Combine a stop with a visit to Dameron Marsh or Hughlett Point, just a few miles away, said Moore.

Shiloh School has picnic tables and toilet facilities.

“As for the garden, if you’re looking for hardy plants for your sunny space, this is the place to visit,” he said.
