Some of the local schools require volunteer hours for students. If you or someone you know requires volunteer credit hours for school, please reach out to Tim Pearson on our department. We have an opportunity for students to earn credit hours this coming Saturday. There will be a sign-in sheet, which is required to earn credit. If you attend, please wear clothes you wouldn't mind getting dirty or paint on. Be at the Fire Station on Depot Ave. in Kilmichael at 7AM.

🔥South Mississippi is a tinderbox. The prolonged combination of intense heat and below normal rainfall has caused the soil and vegetation to dry out to extreme levels. The Keetch-Byram Drought Index is a different way to look at drought. It takes into account the evaporation process of both moisture in soil and vegetation (evapotranspiration) along with lack of rainfall. When levels reach 800, like they are across parts of South Mississippi, this indicates that any fire that starts could become large and burn out of control. This is just one tool used to assess fire risk. Other factors like humidity, wind, and geography are also considered in assessing fire risk. Needless to say, please avoid outdoor burning and activities that can spark fires in the coming weeks. 8.17.26

Today, all of the state is under a Level 3 – Significant Heat Risk, with high temperatures in the upper 90s to low 100s and heat indices reaching 110°F–115°F.

🥵 Heat stroke becomes increasingly likely with prolonged outdoor activity. Protect yourself by:

💧 Hydrating throughout the day
☀️ Taking frequent breaks from the heat
👀 Recognizing the signs of heat illness
🚗 Never leaving people or pets in vehicles

If you must be outside, try to limit strenuous activity and spend time in air-conditioned or shaded areas.

A reminder to keep hydrated if your outdoors!!!Next week might be a rough one!

As we head into the weekend and next week, the heat wave will worsen. If you're going to be spending time outdoors, be sure to stay hydrated and take plenty of breaks in the shade. Look out for family and neighbors who may be more vulnerable to the heat or who don't have AC. Do not leave young children and pets in unattended vehicles. Interiors of vehicles will reach lethal temperatures in a matter of minutes.
