🚨 Don’t worry, this is just a drill! 🚨
Over the next few months, you may see our crews conducting training exercises at an acquired structure in the area of Dahlgren Road and Ernest Ellis Lane.

Training in acquired structures provides our personnel with a valuable opportunity to work in realistic environments that closely simulate actual emergency incidents. This type of hands-on training allows personnel to strengthen critical firefighting, rescue, and incident command skills in ways that cannot be fully replicated in a classroom or traditional training prop. Ultimately, this training helps us better prepare to protect the citizens and visitors of King George County.

Crews will be gaining experience in many areas, including:
• Hose Line Advancement
• Search Operations
• Ladder Placement
• Firefighter Rescue
• Incident Scene Operations

Some training evolutions may also involve the use of theatrical smoke machines to simulate smoke conditions inside the structure. During these drills, “Fire Training Ahead” signs will be posted in the area.

We appreciate the community’s support as we continue training to provide the highest level of service possible.

On May 14, the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ), in coordination with the Virginia Drought Monitoring Task Force, placed King George County under a Drought Warning Advisory as part of the Northern Coastal Plain region according to the U.S. Drought Monitor (droughtmonitor.unl.edu).

Despite recent rainfall, the effects of prolonged severe dryness persist. Soil moisture levels are much lower than typical levels at this time of year. These impacts combined with the recent heatwave have delayed spring crop planting and resulted in anticipated low yields for hay this season. For the general public, recent rain mitigates immediate concern for wildfire; however, there are still potential long-term consequences of this drought on the local agricultural community.

Emergency Relief & Mitigation Options
Because DEQ's drought declarations align with the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) drought disaster designations, King George County farmers may be eligible for emergency financial assistance and loans to help with losses.

Please utilize the following federal resources to find relief programs tailored to your operation:

FSA Disaster Assistance Programs
Access direct information on recovery programs at fsa.usda.gov/disaster-assistance-programs.

Disaster Assistance Discovery Tool
Use this interactive web tool to learn which USDA disaster assistance fits your specific farm’s needs at farmers.gov/protection-recovery/disaster-tool.

Yesterday, the King George Board of Supervisors honored the lives and enduring impact of Leonard and Carolyn Bland, a couple whose 56-year marriage was a testament to faith, compassion and community.

With a proclamation, the board recognized the Blands selfless service and leadership that spanned four decades. As pastor and first lady at Salem Baptist Church, the Blands advocated tirelessly for youth. From supporting St. Jude’s to local shelters, their generosity knew no bounds.

Known for their humility, kindness, and dedication to helping those in need, the Blands have left a remarkable legacy in the community. Their message of love, faith and care for others continues to inspire others.

Please join the board in celebrating the lives of two remarkable individuals who gave so much to this home between the rivers.
