The Improve I-70: Columbia to Kingdom City project is making great progress, but there are a lot of moving parts and a traffic shift coming soon which may impact the services each of you provide.
Tomorrow night, May 1, weather permitting, the contractor plans to shift eastbound traffic between Cedar Creek (the Boone County/Callaway County line) and Callaway County Route M (mile markers 137 to 144). This will move 7 miles of eastbound traffic onto the newly built lanes. All 7 miles will have concrete barrier on the outside, while the first 2.7 miles on the west end will also have a barrier between the two lanes of eastbound traffic. The remaining 4.3 miles will have no barrier between the lanes.
Lanes will be narrowed with a 10-foot width restriction in place, as well, throughout all 7 miles, eastbound.
While it’s expected that both eastbound lanes through this stretch will remain open, as you can imagine, this configuration could result in significant back-ups, especially if a crash occurs within the lanes of the first 2.7 miles.
This configuration will be in place for the duration of time we have eastbound traffic shifted, and when we shift westbound, as well.
Also beginning the night of May and throughout the eastbound shift, both the on- and off-ramps at Exit 137 to Route J (Millersburg) will also be closed. These ramps are expected to remain closed for several months, but the overpass on Route J, connecting to Old US 40/Route DD on the north side of I-70, should remain open.
We have begun working on the segment from Callaway County Route M to U.S. Route 54 in Kingdom City. To build the additional lane of travel in this section, it will look much like the Cedar Creek to Route M segment did with traffic pushed to the outside. We’re working now to strengthen the shoulder and restripe, then will set the barrier wall to close off the median.
We’re reaching out to our I-70 Traffic Incident Management (TIM) Coalition partners to keep you aware of the situation. As progress continues and the contractor moves to other segments, traffic patterns will shift and change. Overall, the Improve I-70: Columbia to Kingdom City has an expected completion date in 2027.
If you’re not already participating, we hold conference calls every three weeks to update stakeholders, such as yourselves, on this project. Please let us know if you would like an invitation to those calls, need more information about the traffic shifts, or have concerns about the traffic or the project, in general. The safety and economic prosperity of Missourians depends, in part, on an I-70 that grows along with the state and nation.
