Your Kingfield Fire Department is proud to share that Captain Joshua Stewart has been awarded the EMS Excellence Award from Maine EMS. The awards ceremony was held in the State House in Augusta yesterday, where awardees gathered with friends, family, coworkers, and stakeholders at the local, regional, and state levels.

The EMS Excellence Award recognizes significant contributions to the EMS system at the regional or state level in one or more areas such as education, administration, or quality improvement.

Captain Stewart was nominated for this award because of his leadership and his significant contributions to the EMS program at the Kingfield Fire Department. Kingfield Fire is the first fire department in Franklin County to take the leap to advanced life support first response, and Captain Stewart has invested countless hours into the process, including training and supporting new EMT and AEMT providers, navigating the Maine EMS grant process, and training all our firefighters and EMS providers in the use of our cardiac monitor/defibrillator and LUCAS device.

One significant consideration through this process has been collaborating with our mutual aid partners. Not only is Kingfield Fire the first ALS-capable non-transport agency in the county, but our LUCAS mechanical CPR device is the first in Franklin County. Working in remote locations with limited resources and long transport times, the LUCAS device can help open doors for better patient outcomes. Not only are we able to provide a higher level of care to our home community, but because of strong regional support and collaboration we have been able to assist in mutual aid medical emergencies with better outcomes for the patients involved.

Even after the training has concluded, the call is complete, the report is written, and the truck bay lights are turned off, Captain Stewart continues to invest in and support the crew. It's common to receive a phone call or text message after a long or intense incident: "Just checking on my people."

While Captain Stewart would rather not be in the spotlight, this award is well earned and well deserved.

This is what we call "threading the needle". Weaving the ladder around obstacles that would have otherwise hindered operations, but a trick-shot through the trees gets you to the roof 👊

Per diem staff will be out in town drilling on ladder truck placement and operations for a few hours. If you see us set to a building it is likely not an emergency.

Your Kingfield Fire Department recently received a donation of DripDrop electrolyte mix packets, which pair perfectly with the bottled water we carry on our apparatus to provide our firefighters and EMS providers with necessary hydration during trainings and incidents. We would like to thank and for the generous donation as part of the 2026 DripDrop Hydration Giveback Campaign. This will help us fight dehydration, promote recovery during long incidents, and keep our crews at their best!

We were so engrossed in the education that we didn't get any pictures....BUT!
Last month the town of Kingfield voted to approve the fire department's budget which included medical direction to practice emergency medicine at the Advanced EMT level. Tonight, we were excited to host our medical director as the instructor for our monthly EMS training. Dr. Conrad brought a wealth of knowledge regarding Intraosseous procedures, a higher acuity/lower frequency procedure that AEMTs are able to do when IV access isn't a viable option and medication delivery or fluid administration is needed.

FMO Investigating Fire in Kingfield



On Tuesday, July 7, 2026, at approximately 3:40 pm, the Office of the State Fire Marshal was notified of a fire with reported explosions at the Carrabassett Valley Veterinary Clinic in Kingfield. Fire Marshal Investigators responded to the scene while fire suppression operations were still in progress. The building, a large two-story structure with a metal roof and metal siding, sustained extensive damage and is considered a total loss. At the time of the fire, the building was occupied. All employees and animals inside the veterinary clinic were safely evacuated. A resident in an upstairs apartment was also able to get out safely however two cats in the apartment perished as a result of the fire. Preliminary investigation indicates the fire was first discovered on the exterior rear of the building in the area of the facility's trash storage. A bystander attempted to extinguish the fire using a portable fire extinguisher and sustained minor burns during the effort. The individual was treated for non-life-threatening injuries. Investigators are continuing to examine the scene to determine the origin and cause of the fire. The cause remains under investigation. Additional information will be released as it becomes available.

KINGFIELD - On Tuesday, July 7 2026, at 1539hrs, Kingfield Fire Department and mutual aid partners were dispatched to a report of an explosion and a building on fire at the Carrabassett Veterinary Services Clinic at 8 Barred Hill Road in Kingfield. Initial dispatch reported that the building had been evacuated but that there were cats still believed to be inside.

First arriving fire apparatus was on scene within six minutes from the initial dispatch, followed closely by additional units from Kingfield Fire and mutual aid partners.

The building houses the veterinary clinic on the ground floor and residential units on the second floor, and was heavily involved with heavy smoke issuing from the front doors of the clinic and heavy fire conditions to the rear of the building and in the area of the propane tanks. Water shuttle operations were employed with additional water supply secured by drafting out of Reed Brook. Crews initially performed an interior attack, but ultimately ran out of water on scene and had to evacuate the building; while additional water supply was being secured, the structure became untenable due to risk of collapse and the operations transitioned to exterior operations only.

The scene transitioned into overhaul at 1738hrs, approximately two hours after the initial dispatch, with additional mutual aid requested for station coverage and to relieve crews working on the fire ground. Mutual aid crews began to be released around 1845hrs. Kingfield Fire cleared the scene and returned to quarters at 2119hrs.

Kingfield Fire returned to the scene around 0630hrs Wednesday morning to extinguish a hot spot that was smoking.

Due to the limited space in the clinic parking lot and the number of apparatus and equipment involved in this incident, traffic on Route 27 was heavily impacted throughout the incident, with the highway being partly or completely closed at different points.

Per Carrabassett Veterinary Services Clinic staff, all of the client animals were evacuated from the building; all staff and occupants were evacuated; and two cats which were believed to be in a residential apartment upstairs were unaccounted for and presumed lost. Kingfield Fire worked with the staff to ensure that all the occupants of the apartments and the animals had places to stay for the night, and the family was connected with the American Red Cross for additional assistance.

Kingfield Fire would like to thank our mutual aid partners at New Portland Fire, Carrabassett Valley Fire, Eustis Fire, Strong Fire, Phillips Fire, New Vineyard Fire, Farmington Fire, New Sharon Fire, Chesterville Fire, Rangeley Fire, Anson Fire, MaineHealth EMS, Franklin County Sheriff’s Department, Maine State Police, Maine State Fire Marshal’s Office, and the Kingfield Fire Auxiliary and community members who reached out to support our responders and the staff and family at the vet’s office.

The Maine State Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating.
