Just so you know.....
To qualify for the West Virginia Homestead Exemption, you must be age 65 or older, or permanently and totally disabled.
You must own and occupy the home as your primary residence for at least six months, and you must be a West Virginia resident for the two consecutive years prior to applying.
Eligibility ChecklistYou must meet the following baseline criteria:Age: You are (or will be) 65 years old on or before June 30 of the assessment year, OR Disability: You are certified as permanently and totally disabled and are not gainfully employed (requires a Social Security award letter or a doctor's signature on an Assessor-provided form).
Residency: You have been a resident of West Virginia for at least two consecutive calendar years and have occupied your property for at least six months.
Ownership: Your name must appear on the property deed (or title for mobile homes), and you must not claim a similar property tax exemption in any other state or county.
How to ApplyTo receive the exemption, you must file an application in person at your local county Assessor's office.
Deadline: Applications must be submitted between July 1 and December 1 to qualify for the next tax year.
Required Documents: Bring a valid West Virginia driver's license or voter's registration card for proof of residency, and proof of age or disability (e.g., birth certificate, SS award letter).
Renewal: Once approved, the exemption automatically rolls over every year as long as you remain in the same home. You only need to reapply if you move.
The BenefitQualifying removes the first $20,000 of your home's assessed value from property taxation.
For example, if your home is assessed at $150,000, your taxes will be calculated on an assessed value of $130,000.
