Happy retirement to our HEAD COACH DEREK HARTWICK💙

Today we celebrate the retirement of Head Coach Derek Hartwick after 23 years at the Academy.

For more than two decades, Coach Hartwick shaped not only strong crews, but strong people. Through early mornings, honest feedback, and constant dedication, he built a culture of commitment, discipline, and pride that will continue long after his final launch ride.

Thank you for the miles, the lessons, and the example you set every day. 👏💙

The T/V Kings Pointer got underway for the Summer Break Trip on the evening of June 24th. The trip included 13 Mids(6 Deckies, 7 Engines), with 10 Officers(including two from the class of 2025 and two from the class of 2021). The Mids were 2/C and 3/C, with one exception who was finishing his sea days before the start of his senior year.
The trip was to Bar Harbor, ME, with some fun areas of operation before and after. We departed with calm weather but hot temperatures, on our way to cooler temperatures. The transit north went through Cape Cod Canal- an exciting experience for the younger group. The CC Canal area is great for introducing the Mids to Vessel Traffic Systems and piloting waters. After arriving in Bar Harbor on June 26th we dropped the hook and stretched our legs around Acadia National Park.
The next morning on the 27th we continued south ahead of a front that was working up the coast. We transited through Vineyard Channel and back offshore to see the Vineyard Wind Farm and the progress completed so far on the 28th.
June 29th was a foggy morning- roughly 1/4 to 1/2 of visibility. Great practice again for the Mids to practice tuning their Radars and listen to the radio closely. Once the fog broke midday we went around Narragansett Bay for more pilotage exercises. That evening, with a clear sky, amplitude of the sun and star fixes were practiced for projects.
The final full day, June 30th was a run through New York Harbor and back into LI Sound, and anchoring in Huntington for the evening to get a head start on cleaning up the ship. Our cook, Brayan, did an amazing job on the grill that evening.
July 1st was arrival back at the Academy, just in time for the start of Indoctrination. The trip went smooth- the engines ran great, Midshipmen were very involved, and a lot of projects completed with new knowledge and understanding of operations throughout.

Day One in the books

Two races down and we’re fired up. There might be a scoring mix-up from Race 1 we think we finished one spot higher than listed, which would nudge us from tied for 6th to tied for 5th. We’re checking it out, because every point matters.

Race 1 - Jammed up off the start and fought through traffic all the way. Race 2 - Went full throttle at the gun, had to break away from the fleet early, but were flying up the first leg… until a big left shift favored the pack we’d just left behind.

But here’s the good stuff our sail handling leveled up fast. Two races in and the crew is already syncing up like we’ve been doing this all season. Feeling that momentum.

This past weekend, the USMMA Power Squadron was honored to participate in "Operation Reel Heroes," a fantastic event dedicated to taking wounded veterans out for a day of fishing. It was an enriching experience to help support these brave individuals and provide them with a memorable day on the water. We're especially proud of Midshipmen Rocco Sergio and Tanner Shultz, who dedicated their time and seamanship to take veterans out fishing personally. Their commitment embodies the spirit of service and leadership that defines the USMMA.The camaraderie and joy shared throughout the day were truly inspiring. We were thrilled to be a part of an event that gives back to those who have sacrificed so much for our country.

January 14, 2025 the T/V Kings Pointer arrived with 11 Midshipmen at Bayonne Drydock and Repair for its scheduled maintenance and repair time. The ship was lifted by the “Christopher Edward”, currently the second largest travel lift on the east coast and named after the fallen NYPD officer. At the time of purchase by BDD it was the largest ever built.
The performance period is to be for approximately 6 weeks. Expected work to be done during the time is to freshen up the above water hull, tank inspection and maintenance, bow thruster maintenance, as well as many other items.
Midshipmen are excited to experience this work period with the crew and MARAD survey team.

T/V Kings Pointer Fall Break Trip Nov 1-8, 2024
The T/V Kings Pointer departed the Academy the evening of November 1st with 21 Midshipmen and 11 crew after finals week concluded. The evening started east through LI Sound to Block Island Sound and along the south shore of Long Island with destination to Cape Henry and Chesapeake Bay. Good weather brought the opportunity for Celestial Navigation, which was the theme of the voyage. We made an evening transit into Chesapeake Bay up to the Potomac River with good training evolutions with traffic and pilots.
We set up for departure from Cape Henry in the morning of the 4th to head back north, utilizing the great weather conditions to continue getting days work in Cel Nav and piloting the coast. We continued along the coast of south shore Long Island and into Vineyard Channel, turning north around Cape Cod for the Cape Cod Canal.
The morning of the 6th we transited through the canal, with 3/C(A-Split) Holly Sugrue having the conn for her first time. The west end of the canal brought in a heavy swell up Buzzards Bay which led us to run weather patterns throughout the evening until the swell laid down. Morning brought clear skies and piloting through Block Island Sound, Eastern Long Island Sound and, finally, anchoring in Huntington Bay, LI by 3/C Justin Lyon(B-Split).
We were able to have a grill out , clean up the ship, and finalize projects before arrival back to Kings Point the morning of the 8th by 2/C(A-Split) Jackson Tolle.
In total we covered 1289nm with 252 sea days earned, not to mention machine shop projects for engineers, training of fuel and l**e oil transferring and switchboard operations, Cel Nav, piloting, and boat handling and anchoring.
Another item to mention is the professional crew onboard with alumni and other state schools representing. Easton Hazim(KP 2020) and Alex Mueller(KP 2021), Mark Sullivan(Mass Maritime), Mike Kmetz(SUNY), Matt Herrington(SUNY), Ethan Nichols(SUNY), and Steven Stratmann(SUNY) all brought a level of professionalism that will be with the Midshipmen for a lifetime.
