How to Maybe Find Aliens with Clara Sousa-Silva @ LYE Parklet (101 Wall Street) Tuesday, June 9 • 6:30pm

Over the last few decades, scientists have found thousands of planets beyond our own. Some of those planets might be habitable, and perhaps even inhabited already; but how can we tell? Clara Sousa-Silva looks for signs of life on other planets by detecting faint signals emitted by potential alien biospheres. In this presentation, Clara draws on her experience investigating strange molecules on strange planets to discuss how often she gets to say: “Could that be aliens?!"

Mutiny in the Continental Army and the Newburgh Conspiracy

In March 1783, George Washington faced a serious threat to his authority and to the civil government of the new nation. Continental Army soldiers based in Newburgh, New York, were anxious to go home and angry about delays in pay and inadequate provisions. Through an anonymous soldier’s letter, threats of a mutiny circulated the Newburgh camp, prompting Washington to address the officers directly and dissuade them from turning their arms against civil authorities.

Join The Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History for an online discussion of the Newburgh Conspiracy with Dr. David Head, Associate Lecturer of History at the University of Central Florida.

Exploring the best of the almost-best!

2026's Half Moon Rondout Cafe book club celebrates books that were shortlisted for prestigious literary prizes. While they didn’t take home the top honor, these titles more than earn their spot on your reading list with their exceptional writing and unforgettable stories.

We meet 1st Saturdays at 2pm at Half Moon Rondout Cafe - 83 Broadway. No registration required.

June’s book is Disappearing Earth by Julia Phillips

One August afternoon, on the shoreline of the Kamchatka peninsula at the northeastern edge of Russia, two girls--sisters, eight and eleven--go missing. In the ensuing weeks, then months, the police investigation turns up nothing. Echoes of the disappearance reverberate across a tightly woven community, with the fear and loss felt most deeply among its women.

No registration required.
