More urgent than ever, this documentary spotlights librarians as harbingers of danger for Americans’ First Amendment rights. The story takes us behind the scenes of the Orwellian funding networks that strategically target children’s books nationwide, and the big-brother reasoning behind their focus on literary control.

Told as neutrally as possible, the film depicts contentious board meetings, bespoke interviews, and four years’ worth of investigative material edited with nostalgic clips.

So many of the problems of climate change require collective action, which can make it feel like there’s nothing one person can do.

The good news? There are tangible actions we can take, right in our own backyards.


Join us for a discussion of Nature’s Best Hope: A New Approach to Conservation That Starts in Your Yard by Douglas W. Tallamy, and learn how anyone can create a “Homegrown National Park,” even with just a balcony.

We’ll dig into practical, doable steps: planting native keystone species, reducing lawn space, cutting back on outdoor lighting, and skipping pesticides. These small shifts support the native insects, especially caterpillars, that birds and local ecosystems depend on. Tallamy’s core message: individual yards, added together, can reverse ecological decline.

Librarian Addie will share resources and firsthand experience starting a native garden right here in Kingston, proof that if you plant it, they will come.

Grow Well Kingston Garden Tour

Join Grow Well Kingston Saturday, August 29, from 9:00am-12:00pm, for a guided visit to five community gardens in Kingston!

The tour starts at the Urban Greens Garden, 22 Elmendorf Street, then visits Harambee Heritage, Barmann Park, Kingston YMCA Farm Project, and finishes at the GW Elem. School Garden.

Meet the garden stewards, share the love of gardening, and meet new neighbors.

The tour will be via bicycle, but it’s not required. See the website to join at a specific garden! Let us know by 8/24 if you would like to borrow a bicycle or need a helmet; [email protected] or (845) 334 - 3909. The route is 4 miles at a slow pace.

Spanish interpretation will be available thanks to the Hudson Valley Farm Hub.

A book just completed a 4,300+ mile journey to reach our shelves, all the way from Wasilla, Alaska. That's farther than Kingston to Vienna, Austria (approximately 4,230 miles). We're calling it: this is the Most Well-Traveled Book of 2026.

Any volunteers for an epic road trip next month? Asking for a friend (the book).

PSA: being part of the Mid-Hudson Library System means our shelves are just the tip of the iceberg. If a book isn't showing up in the catalog, ask about an ILL at the front desk. We can't guarantee we'll find it, but we'll try.
