Our story today was "The Big Cheese" by Jory John.

The Big Cheese is the best at everything, and brags about it, too. When the annual Cheese-cathlon comes around, the Big Cheese is prepared to win, as always. But what happens when the quiet new kid, Wedge Wedgeman, comes out on top? Is a slice of humility all the Big Cheese needs to discover that some things are better than being the best?

The group made their own medals today for the project. They could be the "Best" at anything they wanted. The artwork will be displayed for the next week at the library....stop in and take a peek.

Next week we'll be moving into Fall stories. Join us on Thursday, at 4:30pm. All ages welcome!

Our story today was "Harold Loves His Wooly Hat" by Vern Kousky.

What makes a bear special? For Harold, it is his beloved striped woolly hat. He wears it when he sleeps, when he goes to school, and even when he takes his monthly bath. But when a crow whisks the hat off his head and high up into a nest, Harold doesn't feel so special anymore.

He tries everything to get it back--offering the crow blueberries, worms, and even shiny objects--but alas, the crow will not budge. Turns out that the hat has a new special purpose: keeping three baby crows warm, and Harold learns the joy of helping others.

Our group made their own special hats today, and they all wanted to wear them home, so no artwork to see this week.

Our story today was "The Wise Pickle" by Sarah Howden.

A pickle arrives out of nowhere.

"I have lived a lot of life," it says.

As the pickle slowly withers in the hot sun, the local animals ask it questions. Questions like "Do you ever get bored?" and "Are you hungry?" and "Why are we here?"

The pickle has all the answers.

Except one: what happens next?

The group tried a variety of pickles and pickle flavored chips. The spiciest pickles got a thumbs down, but the dill pickle pretzel sticks were a hit!

Colored pickle pictures will decorate the library for the coming week. Ballerina pickles, football player pickles, and flying hero pickles to name a few. Stop in and see them!

Next week will be hats. Wear one if you'd like!

Light Up the Library Silent Auction Fundraiser

This past year we have encountered significant fluorescent lighting challenges, with numerous fixtures failing and bulbs frequently flickering, resulting in reduced lighting quality throughout the library.

After researching available lighting options and determining that LED lighting is more energy-efficient, longer-lasting, and environmentally friendly than traditional fluorescent lighting, the decision was made to transition the library to LED fixtures.

The “Light Up the Library” fundraiser will be a basket silent auction from October 12th through October 24th. Funds raised will be used to support the library's transition to energy-efficient LED lighting, helping to create a brighter and more welcoming environment for customers and staff. Would you like to help?

We are looking for filled gift baskets, or items we can use to create gift baskets. Also, any Fall themed items and decorations. If you'd like to donate but need a basket to fill, we have plenty available.

Would your company like to be represented, but you don't have time to create a basket? Let us do the work for you!! Simply provide a donation, and we will create a themed auction basket in your company's name. It's a win-win opportunity. Your business will receive recognition for its generosity, and the library will gain another unique basket to help make our silent auction a success!

We would also be happy to pick up donated items or completed baskets. Simply give us a call, 920-394-3281, and we'll arrange a convenient time for pickup.

The kids started school Tuesday so our story this week was "Marley Goes to School" by John Grogaw.

It's the first day of school, and Cassie is all set to go. So is her dog, Marley!

Although he's told to stay, Marley digs a tunnel out of the backyard and sniffs his way to school. As he roams the halls looking for Cassie, he finds trouble instead. From wolfing down hot dogs in the cafeteria to setting free a bunch of mice in science class, Marley won't stop until he locates his best friend.

The group made introduction pictures, talking about themselves. Stop in and get to know our story hour group by looking at their artwork this week.

We have reprinted our "Common Threads" book, which is a collection of history and photos from the Kingston, Dalton, Marquette, and Manchester areas.

The book was originally published in the summer of 1998 to coincide with the 150th birthday and the arrival of the Military Road Wagon Train which stopped overnight in Kingston during its 234-mile journey from Prairie du Chien to Green Bay, recreating the travels of Wisconsin's early settlers.

This is the 4th printing of the book. If you are interested in purchasing a copy it can be picked up at the library during open hours. The cost has remained at $50.00 each.

Today we read the book "Blue Ethel" by Jennifer Black Reinhardt.

Ethel is old, she is fat, she is black, and she is white.
She is also a cat who is very set in her ways...until the day she turns BLUE!

Ethel had rolled and rolled on the sidewalk where the children had played with chalk. Ethel was no longer black and white...she was BLUE!

On her way home the other cats noticed. Ethels heart sank. She wasn't supposed to be blue. And that made her feel very, very blue.

The next day Ethel didn't want to go outside. Until she looked out the window and saw Fluffy, who was young and slim and usually white. But today Fluffy was....PINK!

Together they explored the sidewalk and rolled and rolled and rolled and became COLORFUL!

The group then went outside and colored in a taped off area on the sidewalk and made their own COLORFUL picture. Maybe we'll have some COLORFUL cats in Kingston tonight!

Next week, Sept. 3rd we will not have story hour, but will resume again on the 10th at 4:30pm. Have a great first week of school everyone!!
