Our story today was "Pioneer Girl, The Story of Laura Ingalls Wilder" by William Anderson.

This was a picture biography of Laura, the little girl born in the Big Woods of Wisconsin and raised in covered wagons and on wide open prairies.

After Laura was in her 60's she realized how much she missed those times with Pa and Ma and her 3 sisters in the Big Woods, so she decided to write down her memories of her childhood. She wrote when she had time, between cooking and working in the garden and spending time with Almonzo.

Laura wrote her first book, Litte House of the Big Woods, especially for children so they could know how pioneers had lived.

The children made spinners, a toy they played with in Laura's time. And they ate Gingerbread, made from a recipe from the Laura Ingalls Wilder Country Cookbook, topped with ice cream of course!

Join us next Thursday at 4:30pm for a story hour having to do with seashells.

Our story today was "The Bug Collector" by Alex Griffiths.

After George visits the Museum of Wildlife with Grandad, all he can think about is bugs! The very next day he goes out hunting, but he soon finds there are no more insects left in the garden, and the ones he has captured in jars don't look very happy. George is about to learn exactly why bugs are so important.

The group made paintings of their own captured bugs in a jar, and then to celebrate the last day of school we played games. Jenga, Connect Four, and Bean Bag Toss, and snacked on red, white, and blue frosted brownies.

Join us next Thursday at 4:30pm for a fun story hour.
Hope to see you there!

We will be closed Saturday, May 23 and Monday, May 25 for the Memorial Day weekend.

“Those who have long enjoyed such privileges as we enjoy forget in time that men have died to win them.”
— Franklin D. Roosevelt

Memorial Day is a time for visiting cemeteries and memorials, to mourn the military personnel who died in the line of duty.

Enjoy your Memorial Day weekend!

Our story today was "The Legend of Gravity: A Tall Basketball Tale" by Charly Palmer.

Have you ever heard of Gravity? No, not gravity, the centrifugal force pulling us to the Earth. I'm talking about Gravity--the greatest ball player to ever lace up a pair of sneakers.

Gravity is the new kid on the Hillside Projects basketball team, the Eagles. He once jumped so high that his teammates went out for ice cream before he came back down.

With Gravity on their side, the Eagles feel unstoppable. They’re ready to win “The Best of the Best,” Milwaukee’s biggest and baddest pick-up basketball tournament.

But when they face-off with the Flyers in the final round, the winningest team in the whole city, they realize that it may take a little more than Gravity to bring them to victory.

The group designed their own basketball jerseys and had cupcakes decorated like basketballs.

Join us next Thursday for a "schools out for summer" story hour.
Hope to see you there!

Our book today was “Casey Back at Bat” by Dan Gutman.

Mudville is tied for first place. Casey comes to bat; even his teeth have muscles. He hits the ball mightily. This time around (and much to everyone's surprise), Casey hits a fly ball that soars out of the park and keeps on going.

It crosses the Atlantic Ocean and has an unfortunate encounter with a tower in Pisa before continuing on to the Sphinx in Egypt. Streaking through time, it passes dinosaurs (and sends them to their fate) and past astronauts before heading back to Earth.

Everyone starts to head home, the runners are all in, but as the ball comes flying back towards earth an outfielder puts up his glove to protect himself from getting hit, and the ball lands in his glove!

In the end--suffice it to say there is still no joy in Mudville.

And then we made a Mother's Day picture for the group to take home to mom.

Happy Mother's Day to all this weekend!
