The URI Police Department is sending our deepest sympathies to the Connecticut State Police and family and friends of the Sergeant who was killed in the Line of Duty this morning.

Earlier around 4am during the torrential flooding, the trooper and his vehicle were overtaken by water and swept off a bridge in Woodbury. An extensive search and rescue mission was launched, bringing in dozens of departments around the area to the scene.

FD3, FD4, Utility 18 w/ Marine 3 and Utility 10 w/ Marine 2 were called to assist, but cancelled while en route.

May he forever Rest In Peace.

Day 2 Figaro and Sgt. Vieira competed in the Explosives Detection Challenge and came in 1st place. It was such a great couple of days, they were able to meet some really great K9 Trainers and Handlers. Go Fig!

Partial parking ban

The University has instituted a partial parking ban starting Thursday, Feb. 18, at 6 a.m., and continuing until further notice. During and after the storm, the Departments of Public Safety and Facilities Operations ask for your cooperation to help keep our community safe.

A partial parking ban means:

• No parking on any roadway to include: Upper College Road, Lower College Road, West Alumni Avenue, Ranger Road, Davis Road, Keaney Road and the entire length of Flagg Road.** (**Please note that due to recent additions to on-street parking, several streets have been added to the above partial parking ban.)

• Approved parking: Students may park in any student lot; faculty and staff may park in their designated lots.

• Facilities Services asks that all state vehicles park on the north side of any parking lot to facilitate snow removal.

Be aware of these restrictions and park only in approved locations. Vehicles parked in areas where no parking is permitted during a partial parking ban will be ticketed and/or towed at the owner’s expense.

Community members who have to be out during the storm should expect hazardous driving and walking conditions and should exercise extra caution and give themselves plenty of time to arrive safely.
