How does vehicle extrication actually work?
When most people think of vehicle extrication, they picture firefighters using the “Jaws of Life” to cut apart a vehicle after a crash.
In reality, vehicle extrication is a coordinated process involving patient care, scene safety, fire protection, stabilization of the vehicle, removal of hazards, and carefully creating access to trapped occupants.
In Kingston, Engine 2 carries the department’s primary vehicle extrication equipment, with additional extrication equipment also carried on Engine 1 and Truck 1. Firefighters respond with hydraulic rescue tools, stabilization equipment, glass management tools, cutting tools, airbags, cribbing, and other specialized equipment used to safely remove occupants from damaged vehicles.
At the same time, firefighters may also be providing emergency medical care, controlling traffic hazards, securing vehicle batteries, addressing fuel leaks, protecting against fire hazards, and coordinating with ambulance crews to safely remove and transport patients.
Every crash scene is different. Some extrications may take only a few minutes, while others require extensive planning, teamwork, and specialized techniques depending on the damage and condition of the vehicle.
These incidents require constant training, communication, and coordination between firefighters, EMTs, paramedics, law enforcement, and dispatchers working together toward one goal: safely rescuing and caring for the people involved.
