The First Five Minutes at a Fire

When a fire engine arrives at a working fire in Kingston, there is immediately a long list of critical tasks that need to happen, often at the same time.

On a two-person engine company, the driver is responsible for positioning and operating the fire engine, supplying water to the hose lines, assisting with stretching the initial attack line, deploying a backup hose line for firefighter safety, and establishing a water supply from a fire hydrant.

At the same time, the officer stretches the initial hose line into the building and advances toward the fire, sometimes up stairwells, into basements, or through smoke-filled hallways while pulling a heavy charged hose line behind them.

While advancing toward the fire, that firefighter is also searching for trapped or injured occupants, assessing conditions inside the building, locating the seat of the fire, communicating conditions over the radio, and working to stop the fire from spreading further through the structure.

As additional firefighters arrive, these tasks become more manageable as crews work together to support fire attack, search operations, ventilation, water supply, and rescue efforts.

However, there are times when the initial engine company may be operating alone during the critical first moments of an incident while additional resources are still responding or handling other emergencies throughout the City.

Behind every fire response is a small crew performing multiple demanding tasks simultaneously in rapidly changing and dangerous conditions, all with the goal of protecting lives, homes, and businesses in the City of Kingston.

Inside a Kingston Fire Engine

A fire engine is more than just a vehicle carrying hoses and water. It is essentially a rolling toolbox designed to handle many different types of emergencies throughout the City of Kingston.

In addition to firefighting equipment, Kingston fire engines carry medical bags, oxygen, AEDs, trauma equipment, forcible entry tools, thermal imaging cameras, ladders, fans for smoke removal, hazardous materials equipment, rescue tools, hand tools, water supply equipment, and many other specialized items used during emergencies.

Every piece of equipment carried on an engine serves a purpose. Some tools are used daily, while others are carried for rare but critical emergencies where seconds matter.

The firefighters assigned to these engines train extensively to know where equipment is located, how it operates, and how to quickly deploy it under stressful and rapidly changing conditions.

While the public may only see a fire engine for a few minutes during an emergency response, those apparatus are inspected, stocked, and prepared every day so crews are ready whenever help is needed.

Whether responding to a fire, medical emergency, rescue, hazardous condition, or severe weather incident, Kingston’s engine companies arrive prepared to solve problems and protect the community.

Why do fire engines respond to medical emergencies?

It’s a question we hear fairly often.

The answer is simple: firefighters are often the closest available trained responders and can begin patient care immediately while additional EMS resources are responding.

Kingston fire engines carry medical equipment including oxygen, AEDs, trauma supplies, Narcan, bleeding control equipment, and other lifesaving tools. Kingston firefighters are trained as EMTs and Paramedics and respond to a wide range of medical calls throughout the city.

On many emergencies, those first few minutes matter. Fire engine crews can begin CPR, control severe bleeding, assist patients having difficulty breathing, administer emergency care, and help stabilize scenes before transport to the hospital.

Fire engines also provide additional manpower at medical emergencies. Helping move patients safely, carrying equipment, assisting ambulance crews, and managing complex or chaotic scenes are all important parts of the response.

While the public often associates fire engines with fires, a large portion of the calls firefighters respond to each year are medical emergencies involving neighbors, family members, visitors, and members of our community during some of their worst days.

How does vehicle extrication actually work?

When most people think of vehicle extrication, they picture firefighters using the “Jaws of Life” to cut apart a vehicle after a crash.

In reality, vehicle extrication is a coordinated process involving patient care, scene safety, fire protection, stabilization of the vehicle, removal of hazards, and carefully creating access to trapped occupants.

In Kingston, Engine 2 carries the department’s primary vehicle extrication equipment, with additional extrication equipment also carried on Engine 1 and Truck 1. Firefighters respond with hydraulic rescue tools, stabilization equipment, glass management tools, cutting tools, airbags, cribbing, and other specialized equipment used to safely remove occupants from damaged vehicles.

At the same time, firefighters may also be providing emergency medical care, controlling traffic hazards, securing vehicle batteries, addressing fuel leaks, protecting against fire hazards, and coordinating with ambulance crews to safely remove and transport patients.

Every crash scene is different. Some extrications may take only a few minutes, while others require extensive planning, teamwork, and specialized techniques depending on the damage and condition of the vehicle.

These incidents require constant training, communication, and coordination between firefighters, EMTs, paramedics, law enforcement, and dispatchers working together toward one goal: safely rescuing and caring for the people involved.

As EMS Week comes to a close, the Kingston Professional Firefighters want to recognize the men and women who provide emergency medical care to our community every day.

In Kingston, EMS is not separate from the fire service. It is one of the core services our members provide.

Kingston firefighter-EMTs and firefighter-paramedics respond to every medical emergency throughout the city. They arrive on fire engines, staff the ambulances, provide patient care, support one another on difficult calls, and continue to train so they are ready when our community needs them.

Their work extends beyond Kingston through the Ulster County EMS Stabilization and Enhancement Plan, supporting communities across the county when additional EMS resources are needed.

During EMS Week, we recognize the skill, professionalism, compassion, and commitment it takes to do this work.

To our firefighter-EMTs and firefighter-paramedics: thank you for the care you provide, the responsibility you carry, and the service you give to the residents and visitors of Kingston and Ulster County.

National EMS Week’s 2026 theme is “Improving Outcomes, Together.” Part of that work is technical. Part of it is physical. But a major part of EMS is human.
Kingston firefighters respond to people on some of the worst days of their lives.
Medical emergencies can happen anywhere, at any time, to anyone. Behind every call is a person, a family, a home, a story, and a moment that may be remembered long after the emergency is over.
Our firefighter-EMTs and firefighter-paramedics are trained to assess, treat, stabilize, and transport patients. But they are also called to bring calm into chaos, compassion into crisis, and professionalism into moments filled with fear, pain, and uncertainty.
The emotional side of EMS is not always visible. It is found in difficult calls, quiet conversations, hard decisions, and the ability to keep showing up for the next person who needs help.
This EMS Week, we recognize not only the skill and training required to provide emergency medical care, but also the compassion, strength, and resilience it takes to do this work every day.
