Join us this Thursday, September 3rd for a special reception celebrating our current gallery exhibition, Life Above the Bakery!

This exhibition features objects from the Reher family’s apartment above the bakery at 101 Broadway, where they lived from 1906 to 2004. Drawn from the Center’s permanent collection, these items offer a snapshot of daily life across decades.

Through the objects on display, we invite you to consider how ordinary lives shape the history of a place, and invite you to reflect on the objects that tell your own story.

Featuring everyday objects from the Reher family’s apartment above their bakery at 101 Broadway, Life Above the Bakery offers a glimpse into nearly a century of life in one home. Preserved belongings—from familiar household items to drawers and tins filled with small keepsakes—reveal changing habits, needs, and circumstances across generations. Together, they invite us to consider how ordinary lives shape the history of a place—and which objects might tell our own stories.

Explore the exhibition Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays from 1-5PM in the Reher Center Gallery.

This week, we took the very first step in our Historic Oven Room rehabilitation project. Although it was simply a delivery of the HVAC system that will be installed in the space, we're very excited that this work will start in earnest this Autumn. Bringing climate control into the space will make it more comfortable for visitors and members and also help stabilize the environment for our largest object—the Bennet oven!

Thanks to a grant from the New York State Council on the Arts, we are beginning the rehabilitation of our historic oven room where the Reher family baked bread for Kingston for nearly ninety years. This project will include installation of a new HVAC system, masonry repair and limewash reapplication on the brick walls, pouring of concrete flooring, and reconstruction of the beadboard ceiling with restored historic light fixtures.

We’re so excited to get to work and share this process with you!

This early photograph of the Reher siblings is a rare one in our collection. Taken around 1920, it appears to capture all of Ada and Frank’s children together, relaxed and smiling, as if caught in a candid family moment. The handwritten initials placed above or below each child add an intimate, personal layer to this snapshot from the past.

One detail, however, remains a mystery: the letter written at the bottom right. If Mollie (“M,” born 1903) is seated in the center and Sadie (“S,” born 1908) stands toward the back right, then William (born 1901) would need to appear older than the child on the far right. But that figure is clearly much younger, so who could it be? What letter do you see?

Over the years, our Annual Fall Fundraiser has brought together friends, supporters, neighbors, and community members to celebrate the people and stories that make the Hudson Valley such a special place.
