Our Story
The Adams Center opened in 1898. A bequest from the will of Frederic C. Adams, the building’s former namesake, funded the design and construction. This magnificent structure housed Kingston’s public library for over a century. As the Town’s population grew, the need for library services outgrew the Adams; the Kingston Public Library, directly across Summer Street, opened in 1994.
Over the following years, the building was restored, then rededicated as the Adams Center in November 2012. Restoration allowed the building to be used as a venue for cultural events. From 2012 to 2019, the building was available for rental for group events, small conferences, corporate meetings, seminars and private functions. In the spring 2019, the Adams Center was placed under the control of the Director of the Kingston Public Library.
In the summer of 2019, the Library moved its Local History Collections to the Adams. As of March 2020, the Adams Center was closed due to the pandemic.
