COUNTYWIDE BURN BAN still in effect. Even though it is past April 30 and the 4pm burning law is over until next February 15, you still can not burn. NO BURNING ALLOWED until further notice. Today conditions are favorable for rapid fire spread. Please don’t make our job any harder. Do not burn, throw out ci******es or do anything that could cause an outdoor fire to ignite. Once the ban is lifted it will be posted on our page as well as numerous other county agency pages. Please inform those who may not have Facebook or may not be aware of the Burn Ban.

Thank you to all of our mutual aid partners that spent the day with us yesterday. Fire agencies from around the region and supporting agencies worked through the night on a commercial building fire at the old Potomac Supply pellet mill. This fire although damaging 2 other buildings was contained and completely extinguished by 6 am. Units stayed on scene and worked with Virginia State Police on the investigation. A second fire was confirmed inside of a shavings bin and was watched until 11 am and at that time the decision was made by Chief 3 to let it burn as it was contained and continue to monitor it as information provided showed the bin empty. At 3 pm an area of black smoke was seen again at Potomac Supply. Upon investigation a woods fire was located behind the plant in the old log yard. This was a separate incident to the previous 2 fires. This was confirmed to be a wind driven fire in a ravine that even could spread to residences. As a precaution residences along Kinsale Road were evacuated. County Emergency management assisted with this event as well as again many regional mutual aid partners. At 630 pm the Virginia Dept of Forestry made the decision to let the remaining contained fire burn and people could return to there residences. At that time the fire in the shavings bin was addressed and extinguished. Units responded back overnight to address resident concerns and extinguished a small rekindle at the shavings bin. During the evening event a structure fire was reported on Black Beard Pond Rd and was handled by a unified response of units on scene at Potomac. As of this am there is fire within the fire lines of the log yard fire and residents will see smoke in the area. We will continue to monitor the fire until it is completely out. Again thank you to everyone that assisted yesterday!

I would like to thank each and every person and agency that assisted us overnight and throughout the day today at Bevans Oyster Company. High winds, cold temperatures and multiple exposures made a hard job even harder. Without all of the mutual aid agencies responding to help and the ability to directly communicate with each other the outcome would have been far worse. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
