Memorial Day marks the beginning of warmer weather, outdoor activities and weekend trips increasing traffic on Kansas roadways. Edwards County Sheriff’s Office reminds the public to avoid dangerous consequences and buckle up.

Edwards County Sheriff’s Office joins law enforcement across the country to remind drivers to Click It or Ticket. Drivers can expect to see increased law enforcement presence on local roads during the nationwide safety campaign, which runs from May 17- June 1

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, buckling up helps keep occupants safe and secure inside a vehicle, while failing to wear a seat belt can result in ejection during a crash—an outcome that is almost always deadly.

Seat belts are one of the safest choices drivers and passengers can make. Consider these safety tips:
• The right seat belt matters. The shoulder belt should lay flat across the middle of your chest and away from your neck.
• The lap belt should fit across your hips, not your stomach.
• Never put the shoulder belt behind your back or under your arm.
• Children should be secured in age and size appropriate restraints until they are old enough and large enough for adult seat belts.

Yesterday reminded us how quickly things can change on the farm. We want to extend a sincere thank you to the Edwards County EMS, Edwards County Sheriffs Office, Kansas Highway Patrol, Trousdale Fire Department, and EagleMed for your rapid response, professionalism, and care during an accident at TDN Farms yesterday.

Thankfully, our employee is okay and getting taken care of. We sure appreciate everyone who showed up so fast and helped when it mattered most. We’re lucky to have people like you in our rural communities. Thank you all.

The Edwards County Sheriff’s Department would like to extend our sincere thanks to everyone who assisted with the fires yesterday. Successfully managing an incident of this magnitude requires strong teamwork, and that is exactly what we received. We could not have accomplished this without the dedication, cooperation, and rapid response of our partners.
Agencies and organizations involved included Hodgeman County, Ness City, Belpre, Garfield, Ford County, Lewis, Kinsley, Tyree Ag, the U.S. Forest Service, Norwich, Abilene, Kiowa County, Ashland, Salina, Kingman County, Edwards County Emergency Management, Sedgwick County, Ford County communications, Edwards County EMS, and the Edwards County Sheriff’s Office. Several task forces were also deployed to assist; while not all individual task force names are available at this time, their contributions were invaluable. All the local farmers that brought equipment to help make breaks, thank you!
Everyone in our community who brought food and water for first responders, Thank You!! Your assistance is much appreciated!

April 20 — commonly known as “420 Day” — is a counterculture holiday often associated with increased ma*****na use. While some may choose to celebrate, Edwards County Sheriff's Office reminds the public that driving under the influence of drugs, including ma*****na, is illegal and dangerous.
Edwards County Sheriff's Office joins law enforcement across the state to remind drivers If you Feel Different, You Drive Different. Drivers can expect to see increased law enforcement presence on local roads during the statewide safety campaign, which runs from April 15-21.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, drugs like ma*****na can impair the ability to drive because they slow coordination, judgment and reaction times. Driving impaired by any substance whether legal or not is against the law in all 50 states. Even in states where ma*****na laws have changed, it’s still illegal to drive under the influence of the drug.
Driving high has serious and deadly consequences.
• If you choose to use ma*****na or any impairing drug, arrange for a designated driver.
• If you see an impaired driver on the road, contact law enforcement.

For more information about ways to reduce drug-impaired driving go to www.trafficsafetymarketing.gov/safety-topics/drug-impaired-driving.
