Kinston Community Center Swimming Programs

Kinston Community Center Swimming Programs The Kinston Community Center Swimming Programs Page! Posting swimming fundamental information. I am in the pool most of the day and prefer text or email.

PRIVATE LESSONS—The center charges $30 per lesson for one-on-one private lessons; I teach 25-30 private lessons weekly year round, teach all groups classes, and coach the recreational swim team. For 6 & under, lessons are 30 minutes; for seven and older, lessons are 45 minutes. Currently, I am booked for private lessons for the summer and now for fall. Just let me know if you are interested in pri

vate lessons for mid-January and spring as soon as possible. I work Monday thru Friday from 2 pm to 7:30 pm, and Saturdays from 8 am to 1 pm. I make the schedule for all private lessons so text me at 252-214-4930 if you are interested in this option. OFF-SEASON GROUP LESSONS—I am putting 4-5 kids (minimum of 4) together for off-season group lessons. When I find those in the same skill levels, I put them in groups where I must have at least four kids to offer the group rate of $50 for six lessons, a lesson per week. Then the kids can do this over and over again until they can swim 25 yards of the pool (a pool length) or feel comfortable in the water treading on their own for 30 seconds in the deep end, and it is a way to be affordable for them to master their swimming skills. Learning to swim takes dedication and many months. If you are interested in this option, please let me know as soon as possible. The next set of groups will start in mid-January; please let me know if you are interested between October to December 1st at the latest for a January start. GROUP LESSONS—The center has several children's group lessons every year in May, June, July, and August. This is ten kids in each group, and they usually fill up very quickly. They are $50 for six lessons and are introductory to swimming fundamentals; more swimming instruction will be recommended; this is just the beginning of swimming. To sign up for summer children's group lessons, do so starting early April before the groups are full. The August groups are booked. I just called the center. They handle all the bookings for the summer groups. For next summer, you need to contact the center in early April to sign up for these groups to get in and register with the center. I wish I could teach more groups, but I am doing all I can now and am in the water 6-9 hours per day, 5-6 days per week year-round. KINSTON KINGFISH SWIM TEAM—Most kids I have privately and who all started in group sessions are working on swimming on our recreational swim team. The swim team ages are from 5-18, and the kids begin early to master their swimming fundamentals. As a competitive swim instructor and coach, it is my job to prepare them for the swim team. If you would like for your child to take this route, I will be more than happy to help you. If we start now, he could be ready for the swim team by next summer. The swim team has 3 - 8 week seasons: summer June-July, fall October-November, and spring January-February. For more information on this option, let me know. FOR ALL SWIMMING PROGRAMS—We require that you get a good pair of goggles; goggles are essential when learning to swim so that they put their heads under the water quickly and can navigate around the pool. I recommend getting a good pair from www.swimoutlet.com or www.speedousa.com. They are reasonably priced and have good quality. DO NOT GET A FACE MASK that covers the nose. Once you have registered for group classes, I will send you a welcome text and discuss these things. Make sure when you register for group classes through the center that you give a working cellular number because I communicate with group class parents through text for weather cancellations and other miscellaneous pool concerns. If you have any further questions about any of the Kinston Community Center Swimming Programs, please let me know. You can also get more information such as swimming videos, photos, and miscellaneous from this page. I look forward to working with you!

Our little mermaids and nemos, the 4-5 years olds, working hard on their swimming kicks, streamline swimmer-in-training at the Kinston Community Center. Join us this summer for much fun in the sun, learning to swim, and having fellowship with others. I have a new partner, Suzanne Lane Nix, who will be assisting me this summer, and I am blessed to have her with all of her swimming knowledge and years in the pool. Some slots are still available for those who wish to learn this summer. Future sessions are June 15-25, July 12-22 & August 10-20! For information on dates and times and to register, see the instructions on the flyer posted here.

DIVE IN with us on May 20 from 10 - 12pm in Kinston, NC for a 2-hour swim clinic aimed to increasing water safety and basic swimming techniques to help youth feel safe and comfortable in the water. Swim 1922 is a national partnership with Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc., and USA Swimming created to address the unfortunate truth that according to the CDC, approximately 10 people drown every day in the U.S.A. The goal of Swim 1922 is to strengthen USA Swimming’s commitment to diversity and inclusion by breaking down barriers, created by a lack of access and exposure, and expanding our footprint in the local community to increase swim participation and decrease drowning rates.

Note to Children & Adult Swim Groups: Be proud of yourselves, as proud as I am of you! I am so proud of the children and adult swim groups that have worked so hard all year to be professional swimmers! They are dedicated and resilient, have overcome the fear and anxiety of the deep water, and are now comfortable and swimming like fish! It is so rewarding to be able to be authentic, open myself up to my swimming views and values, be empathetic with others, and understand how they feel about their fears and reservations. I will miss them when our time is over, but I will have more to help and will be comforted to know that they can save their own lives while in the water in the future and have come so far.

What is the most important word in swimming? STREAMLINE! Let’s learn how to be a more streamlined swimmer. Read below and watch the video, link is at the bottom of this post.

How to Do Streamline:

Let’s break down the streamlined position into four sections: Hands, head, hips, and legs:

Hands: Stack one hand on top of the other. Wrap the top thumb over the bottom hand. Extend your arms overhead, locking out your elbows and squeezing your biceps to your ears.

Head: Your head should not extend forward past your arms, and you should not look forward at your hands. Keep your eyes looking straight down. Hint: if you can feel your ears on your inner arms, you’re doing it right.

Hips: Keep the core engaged and squeeze your butt. Think about becoming rigid like a pencil.

Legs: Squeeze your legs together and point your toes.

Swim Sets to Improve Streamline:

Give these swim sets a try to work on streamlining! You can do these in freestyle, backstroke, or butterfly.

Set 1: 4 x 50 Free or stroke
Kick halfway or 15m off the turn
Can also focus on a specific number of dolphin kicks off each wall (ex., five kicks off of each wall)

Set 2: 4 x 75 Free or stroke, build dolphin kicks by 25 (pick a challenging number for you).

Example:
1st 25: 2 kicks underwater
2nd 25: 3 kicks underwater
3rd 25: 4 kicks underwater

Practice the fastest position in the water - streamline! Improve your streamline to become quicker and more efficient off of every wall.Shout out to our spon...
