SAFE in Lenoir County SAFE in Lenoir County is a non-profit organization established to meet the critical needs of victims of domestic violence. SAFE in Lenoir County, Inc.

If you or someone you know is being abused, call our 24 hour hotline at: (252) 523-5573 is a non-profit organization established in 1985 to meet the critical needs of victims of domestic violence. In March of 1986 SAFE opened its first shelter doors and since then, the organization has grown substantially. In July of 2010, we became the official provider of sexual assault services for Greene Coun

ty. SAFE has grown to operate with eleven paid staff and a twelve-member Board of Directors. Our Lenoir County shelter provides emergency shelter for victims of domestic violence in Lenoir and Greene Counties. SAFE in Lenoir County has been a United Way Agency since 1987. We receive funding from the Department Of Administration through the NC Council for Women & Youth Involvement and Family Violence Prevention Services, and the Department of Public Safety/Governor's Crime Commission. We also receive local funds from the City of Kinston, Kinston Noon Rotary, the Allstate Foundation, as well as other occasional foundation funding throughout North Carolina. Since 2000, we have collaborated with the Lenoir County and the Greene County Departments of Social Services to work with and victims of domestic violence. We also have collaborative agreements with many other community agencies to provide meaningful, comprehensive services and referrals throughout our service area. In addition, SAFE is proud to offer healthy relationship education for youth (middle-school through college-age) and adults. We are happy to come speak to your group at any time. Education can help stop the cycle of violence in our communities and change lives. We also offer professional trainings to law enforcement, faculty, businesses, or any group that would benefit from knowing the signs of domestic violence and what to do or how to help someone who is being abused. SAFE offers services throughout Lenoir and Greene Counties and is grateful for community support and collaborations that allow us to provide these services.

You may have seen the recent news about Greenville's Center for Family Violence Prevention budget shortfalls. SAFE, which has served Lenoir and Greene Counties for over 40 years is in the same boat.

Our grant funding has continued to be cut year after year and without any financial support from our local city or county, SAFE is struggling to maintain services. We are already operating with minimal staff and need $50,000 to maintain these critical services.

Please consider that while you may not see our services or the victims of daily abuse in their homes, we see them, daily. We hear their stories, guide them to safety, and help them pick up the pieces of broken lives and hearts to a place of hope and healing. Most people don't want to talk about abuse. They're embarrassed it happened to them or they fear retaliation.

Regardless of the reason, the impacts are real. Our families are in crisis. These issues aren't isolated to one place or one home. 1 in 4 women and 1 in 6 men are victims of severe abuse in their lifetime. This impacts children's ability to learn and thrive now and in the future. Raised in violent homes, boys are 11x more likely to be perpetrators of violence and girls are 6x more likely to be victimized. Exposure to violence leads to 4x more attempted childhood su***de and 6x more attempted adult su***de.

Economically, DV costs $12 billion annually in the US alone. That's 8 million missed days of work. The average cost of care after physical assault is over $4,273. Domestic Violence is the leading cause of homelessness in women and children.

Violence in someone else's home does NOT end there. It affects all of us. It's time we stop seeing domestic violence as a private issue or something that is happening "over there". DV knows NO BOUNDS. It affects ALL races, ages, genders, religions, economic statuses, education levels and it's happening more than you realize.

Please consider helping us save these critical services for the future and health of our communities. You can donate using the "Donate Now" button on Facebook, on our website: www.safeinlenoir-greene.org, or by sending us a check to our office: SAFE in Lenoir County, Inc. 2500 N Herritage St, Suite D, Kinston, NC 28501.

If you'd like to volunteer your time, please be aware that confidentiality is key. All volunteers must have at least 20 hours of training to work with survivors and we need a long-term commitment to ensure confidentiality, safety, and continuity for our clients, many of whom are experiencing severe trauma. If you would like to dedicate your time to this cause, please call our office: 252-523-4511.

For women, children, and families escaping domestic violence, Greenville’s Center for Family Violence Prevention is a helping hand. Now, due to a $160,000 budget deficit, the center is in danger of closing this month.
