Great News for Elbert County Homeowners and Contractors!

You spoke. We listened.

Elbert County has updated its building permit process to make things faster and easier when submitting non-site-specific plans, such as pre-engineered car ports, barns, or sheds.

What this means for you: You or your builder can now submit standard master plan sets/non-site-specific plans when applying for your permit — instead of creating fully custom drawings. By skipping the need for an engineer to draw plans specifically for your property, you save both time and money.

One important thing to know: The plans submitted for your project must clearly show which options and features within the pre-engineered structure plan apply to your specific build. Anything that doesn't apply needs to be marked out. Think of it like checking the boxes on exactly what your project will include — the county needs to see your selections clearly spelled out. If the plans aren't clearly marked, they may be sent back for corrections, which can cause delays — so ensure you and/or your builder are on top of this step.

Help Strengthen Elbert County’s Groundwater Well Data.

Elbert County is expanding its Water Well Monitoring Program and we’re looking for volunteer well owners to join the effort.

Why volunteer?
• Free well specific data every two months
• Help improve groundwater tracking countywide
• Support the comprehensive plan to ensure Elbert County’s water future

This program expansion replaces several long-standing monitoring wells lost due to homeownership changes or access limitations. Your participation helps strengthen the entire network.

Elbert County Government on Two Hour Delay Wednesday, May 6 due to Expected Severe Weather.

With the safety of the traveling public as our top priority, all Elbert County Government offices will be on a two-hour delayed schedule Wednesday, May 6. Information on closures or delays for Elbert County Combined Courts can be found here: coloradojudicial.gov

While a significant storm will move across Colorado tonight, Elbert County crews will be out clearing county roads of ice and snow throughout the duration of the storm. The priority for snow removal is high traffic roadways to ensure safe passage for emergency vehicles. CDOT crews will be out statewide. If you must travel during this storm, please allow extra time to arrive safely at your destination.

For information on snow and ice removal responsibilities on state highways within Elbert County, visit the Colorado Department of Transportation website.

What to Know:
• Check COtrip.com or the COtrip Planner app before driving
• Expect slick conditions early Wednesday
• Slow down, increase following distance, and never pass snowplows
• Be aware of possible traction/chain laws and safety closures

Elbert County has submitted a formal request asking the Colorado Public Utilities Commission (PUC) to reconsider its recent decision approving Xcel Energy’s preferred route for new high voltage transmission lines in the Power Pathway Project.

The County fully supports Colorado’s energy goals and the importance of the project itself. However, we believe the PUC’s ruling imposes unnecessary and permanent impacts on residents, scenic corridors, and areas designated for economic development.

Our request outlines concerns regarding public safety, land use compatibility, and the lack of meaningful exploration of viable alternative routes — including options the County has raised since 2023.

Elbert County has never opposed the project, only the specific alignment chosen. We remain committed to working toward a responsible route that balances statewide energy needs with community values, safety, and long-term planning.
