It's gunna be rainin' cats and dogs out there next week! No need to water your lawns this weekend, we've got plenty of rain coming later in the week. Lush green lawns only need 1 inch of water per week to promote healthy root growth and fullness - and Mother Nature is our sprinkler this week. 🥰

💛 Put your pups in little yellow raincoats and your cats in their favorite windowsill, it's time to jump in puddles!

Happy International Dog Day from Sir Tontu, Duke of Snorts (and the Kirkland Conserves team)!

Tontu is enjoying a lovely afternoon in the backyard to celebrate. He can’t remember who made this mess. Couldn't be him. Certainly not his problem anymore.

If your backyard is also your dog’s bathroom, chances are you don’t remember where every p**p ends up either. We get it. But in honor of this important holiday, here’s a friendly reminder to think about doing some work cleaning up that doggie doo before the rains come back.

Here are a few good reasons to scoop that p**p NOW:

1) Right now the doggie doo is dried out and easier to pick up - but mushy dog p**p after rain is gross. Do something nice for your future self and don't make it their problem.

2) Dog p**p can harbor parasites and diseases that rainwater runoff can carry from your yard into the storm system, and from there into the nearest creek, where it can affect wildlife and other pets. YUCK.

3) Unscooped p**p is a major cause of extra nitrogen and phosphorus in our creeks, which can lead to algae blooms. Algae blooms can be harmful to wildlife and water quality.

4) Dogs don’t have thumbs. In the case of some dogs like Tontu, they may also lack brains. But WE have both, so we can be responsible for them!

Happy International Dog Day, and please give your dogs a special treat and an extra pet from all of us!

While the solid waste team was placing new recycling signage on some recycling carts the other day, we noticed some heavy contamination in the recycling carts.

Some helpful tips from the team :)

Amazon Packaging: Only cardboard packaging is recyclable. Other Amazon packaging belongs in the garbage.
Towels/Clothing/Shoes/Textiles: These are not recyclable. Donate or repair when possible. Otherwise, place them in the garbage.
Keep recyclables loose: Do not bag your recyclables! Keep all items clean, dry, and loose. No plastic or garbage bags.

What's going on beneath the surface in Lake Washington in August?

🐟The Kings are back! 🐟

About 15,000 chinook/king salmon migrate back to freshwater through the Ballard Locks and into Lake Washington every year, and August is peak migration season! After passing through Lake Washington they head to the rivers and streams they came from to spawn in the fall. Chinook salmon have occasionally been spotted in Juanita Creek, so maybe some of them are headed to Kirkland!

Salmon season is a great reminder that we share these waterways with some pretty awesome neighbors who have worked really hard to get here! The best way to help our aquatic amigos out in our daily lives is to make sure the water they are swimming in is clean.

Here are some clean water tips for August:

🌿Practice Natural Yard Care
Bugs eating your garden bounty? Try alternative solutions before reaching for insecticides that can run off of our gardens and pollute creeks when the rains return.

🛻Fix that leak!
Is your car dripping something it shouldn't on the road or in your driveway? Get that leak fixed! Everything that hits the pavement hits the creeks, because rain washes it into the storm system, which flows to the nearest body of water without being treated first. You can also reduce the harm of the drip temporarily by putting cardboard down to catch the leak, and disposing of that cardboard in the trash.

As of August 19, 2026, the City of Kirkland accepts mercury-containing light bulbs for recycling at the same drop-off location as battery recycling: the lower lobby of City Hall.

Accepted: CFL bulbs, HID bulbs, and Fluorescent bulbs.

Not accepted: LED bulbs, Incandescent bulbs, Halogen bulbs

The City is partnering with LightRecycle Washington to safely recycle these bulbs. Collected mercury-containing lights are transported to an authorized recycling facility, where trained workers sort and process the bulbs using specialized equipment.

Fluorescent tubes and most other accepted lights are crushed in a machine, allowing the glass, metal, and other components to be separated for recycling.

Full or partially full fire extinguishers are accepted at hazardous waste collection sites. Fire extinguisher containers must be 7.5 gallons or less and there is a limit of 5 tanks per trip. Empty fire extinguishers can go in the garbage. Empty fire extinguishers are not recyclable.
