Paul B. and Kent S. put up two more Community Wildlife Habitat signs today, near parking areas. We hope our neighbors and visitors take note and get inspired for their yards.

Thanks to Kipp B. for funding the purchase of all 3 signs!

Many thanks to Sharon R. of Kirkland's Community Wildlife Habitat team for suggesting that we apply for Certified Wildlife Habitat recognition. The National Wildlife Federation granted it and we installed this nice sign next to the frog pond on Sunday.

Jonah, Kent, Kyle, Paul, and Robert planted some lovely bare-root plants today from the King Conservation District's yearly plant sale. 10 Pacific Rhododendrons, 10 Pacific Ninebarks, and 30 Red Flowering Currant were distributed in the creek valley north of the building and along the new fence at the far SW corner of the property.

Paul, Kyle, and Kent pruned some branches leaning out over 4th Street and then Paul and Kent raked up some branches in the "bump out" parking area that fell during a recent windstorm. The big leaf maple from which the latter branches fell is nearing the end of its lifespan.

Thanks to Kent and Robert for replacing the trail information signpost. The original had rotted at its base. The new post is set in concrete, which we hope will help it last longer.

Thanks to Paul for removing a patch of invasive reed canary grass along the banks of the northern-most stream and putting down cardboard to smother any remaining roots. Kyle and Kent helped haul wood chips to put on top of the cardboard.

The new fence is complete! Here's what has happened over the past couple of weeks:

JMV Professional Tree Service of Renton removed a dead cherry tree snag and helped remove a large hazelnut shrub that was unfortunately in the way of the fence. They also disposed of the branches. Members of Troop 591 removed ivy from around the fence area. Kent, Kyle, Pat, and Sean removed part of the hazelnut root ball to prevent interference with the fence.

A large party of Scouts from Troop 579 did a great job constructing the new fence on Saturday, working a full 8-hour day. On Sunday, Robert and Kent transplanted some ferns to fill out the steep hillside on the north edge of the fenced area and also transplanted two phlox plants that needed more light.

Some great work is happening in the far southwest corner of the upper parking lot. An Eagle Scout candidate from Troop 579 is working with his fellow Scouts to replace the broken-down fence, which has finally allowed us to remove the last of the invasive ivy on the property. Yahoo!

CHRP member Kent donated a "bag o' ferns" that had volunteered in various places in his yard. Robert and Kent planted several of them on the short steep hill at the upper end of the parking lot. The rest will be planted after the fence in that area is replaced.

The story of CHRP

Want to make a difference? Join us in our Community Habitat Restoration Project (CHRP) ministry. We are returning these 2.5 acres to their full beauty and working to connect the community with nature. Join one of our CHRP projects. Remove the invasive weeds and replant with natives in the wetland and forest. Build a bench. Help coordinate a native plant sale. There are many opportunities, for all ages, and we hope you will join us. We meet monthly, usually on the second Saturday.
