Today, Kirkland Fire and Police gathered with city staff for a ceremony in solemn remembrance of September 11, 2001.

We remembered the nearly 3,000 people who were killed, including 343 firefighters and 60 police officers. We honored the bravery of all who responded, the strength of the survivors and the enduring grief of the families who lost loved ones.

Twenty-five years have passed, but the lives, service and sacrifice of those lost remain with us.

We will never forget.

Cat Burglar Apprehended
Last week, a resident in the Moss Bay neighborhood heard banging inside their home and called 911 to report a possible burglary. When officers arrived, they found the unexpected intruder perched at the top of the stairs: a bobcat.

Officer Farman encountered the animal upon arrival, and officers deployed an unmanned aircraft to monitor its movements inside the home. This allowed officers to maintain a safe distance and guide the response without placing anyone at unnecessary risk.

Officers safely corralled the bobcat into an isolated room until the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife arrived. The bobcat was sedated and later released near Forbes Creek, close to the natural habitat where it was found.

No injuries were reported to the resident, officers or bobcat.

Officers believe the bobcat climbed a tree and jumped through an open window, possibly drawn inside by the resident’s cat. The cat was later found unharmed.

If you encounter a bobcat, give it plenty of space and never approach or feed it. Washington Fish and Wildlife also recommends keeping pets indoors, especially between dusk and dawn, and securing small livestock and poultry. If a bobcat enters your home, move people and pets away from the area and call 911.

School bus rules can feel like a driving test question you weren’t expecting. Good news: we have your back-to-school driving refresher. 🚌

Bus stopped. Red lights flashing. Stop paddle out. Now what?

It depends on the road:
- One-lane road: Everyone stops.
- Two-lane road: Both directions stop.
- Three or more lanes: Stop if you're traveling in the same direction as the bus.
- Road with a center turn lane: Stop if you're traveling in the same direction as the bus.

One part that is always the same:
🟡 Yellow lights = slow down and prepare to stop.
🔴 Red lights + stop paddle = stop if you're required to.

Give buses plenty of room and keep an eye out for students who may be crossing the road.

Starting next week, leave a few minutes earlier, expect more traffic around schools and remember: getting there a minute sooner isn't worth risking someone's safety.

Arrest Made in Multi-Jurisdiction Vehicle Theft Investigation

After months of investigation, detectives arrested 28-year-old Tyrone Fareed of Burien on August 26 in connection with multiple vehicle theft cases across the Puget Sound region.
In many of the cases, Fareed arranged to purchase vehicles listed for sale online and provided sellers with fraudulent checks before taking possession of the vehicles.

Fareed was arrested in Bellevue and booked on charges of Theft of a Motor Vehicle, Forgery and Trafficking of Stolen Property in the First Degree. He also had multiple outstanding felony warrants.

Thank you to the Kirkland Police Department, U.S. Marshals Service Pacific Northwest Violent Offender Task Force and the Washington State Department of Corrections for their assistance with the investigation and arrest.
