What an incredible day at our first-ever Project Pencils & Patrol! I want to personally thank everyone who helped make this event such a tremendous success. It was truly rewarding to see so many local children and families leave with the school supplies they need to start the school year prepared. This event would not have been possible without the generosity of our sponsors and the dedication of so many individuals working behind the scenes.

A very special thank you goes to Magers Contracting LLC and our own CBHL Krista Magers for their incredible generosity in providing the backpacks and school supplies, as well as the countless hours spent organizing and preparing them for today’s event. Although Krista is employed through Centerstone, she serves in our jail and works alongside our staff every day. She is truly an invaluable member of the Adair County Sheriff’s Office team, and I am incredibly grateful for everything she does for our office and our community.

I also want to thank Smithfield Fresh Meats Corp., Kraft Heinz, Hy-Vee, Lloyd Distributing Co., and Lay’s for helping provide the hot dogs, chips, and drinks that everyone enjoyed throughout the day.

To the employees of the Adair County Sheriff’s Office who volunteered their time and worked in the scorching heat, thank you. Your willingness to serve our community—both inside and outside of your daily responsibilities—is something I am incredibly proud of. I also want to recognize the inmates at the Adair County Jail, whose creativity and hard work produced the artwork for our Paw Patrol themed posters featured on each table.

Most importantly, thank you to every family who came out to support our first Project Pencils & Patrol. Seeing the smiles on the faces of the children reminded me why partnerships like these matter. When our community comes together with a common purpose, we can make a real difference. I hope this is just the beginning of a tradition that will continue to grow for years to come.

Today, we proudly celebrate Independence Day and the 250th anniversary of America’s founding. As we reflect on our nation’s history, we honor the freedoms we enjoy and those who have served and sacrificed to protect them.

As you celebrate, please remember to make safety part of your plans. If you’re traveling, buckle up, never drive impaired, keep an eye on children around water and fireworks, and be considerate of your neighbors and pets.

We also want to extend our sincere appreciation to the deputies, corrections officers, dispatchers, EMS, firefighters, healthcare workers, and all first responders who are serving our communities today so others can celebrate safely. Your dedication does not go unnoticed, and we are grateful for your hard work and commitment.

🎒 BATTLE OF THE BADGES: BACKPACK EDITION

The Adair County Sheriff’s Office is proud to join the Adair County Health Department, CAPNEMO, Kirksville Police Department, Kirksville Fire Department, and Adair County Ambulance District in a friendly competition to support the 2026 Back-to-School Fair.

Now through June 30th we are collecting new backpacks to help local students start the school year prepared and ready to succeed.

Here’s where you come in:

✅ Purchase a new backpack
✅ Drop it off at the Adair County Sheriff’s Office (best times are during business hours 8am-5pm Mon-Fri)
✅ ⭐️ Help local students! ⭐️
✅ Help us earn the title of GOAT (Greatest of All Time) of Giving!

As the reigning champs of the last Battle of the Badges, we are throwing down the challenge to our friends at Kirksville PD, Kirksville Fire Department, and Adair County Ambulance District! The agency that collects the most backpacks will take home bragging rights, a trophy and a special treat. However, at the end of the day, everyone wins when local kids have the tools they need to succeed (but we’d still like to bring home that trophy 😉)

Adair County Sheriff’s Department Officially Receives Missouri Blue Shield Designation

Friday, June 12, 2026, Adair County Sheriff’s Department received official word from the Missouri Department of Public Safety that we have earned the Missouri Blue Shield designation for 2026. This honor recognizes Missouri communities that demonstrate their commitment to enhancing public safety, investing in and supporting law enforcement and building partnerships between law enforcement and our community. Adair County Sheriff’s Department was also recognized with a Blue Sheld designation in 2025.

The Missouri Blue Shield Program was created by Governor Kehoe in January 2025 through Executive Order 25-03. In 2025, 201 Missouri communities earned the Blue Shield designation, recognizing local governments’ significant efforts to reduce crime and foster law enforcement – community partnerships to strengethen public safety. The opportunity to earn the Blue Shield designation for 2026 opened on February 4, 2026. Communities that earned the Blue Shield designation in 2025 had to reapply this year to be approved once again. Communities that earn a Missouri Blue Shield designation will receive grant funding for law enforcement training and equipment as part of Governor Kehoe’s Recommended Budget for the State Fiscal Year 2027, provided the General Assembly approves the funding.

“Strengthening public safety and committing to joint law enforcement community – citizen safety efforts is what the Blue Shield Program is all about and the Department of Public Safety is honored to work with communities like Adair County Sheriff’s Department that have answered the Blue Shield challenge,” said Mark James, Director of the Missouri Department of Public Safety (DPS).

Adair County Sheriff’s Department Finance Director Kristine Dawson stated, “Due to the Blue Shield Grant we were able to obtain a 2026 Ford Explorer Interceptor with a partition to help ensure the safety of our deputies while they are performing their duties within the community.”

Adair County Sheriff’s Department earned a Missouri Blue Shield designation because of its exceptional commitment to public safety. Through localized community efforts and partnerships, the Adair County Sheriff’s Department, under the leadership of Sheriff Lene, has expanded training opportunities for Deputies and Corrections Officers, including Crisis Intervention Training and Human Trafficking Awareness Training, while maintaining active participation in the NOMO Drug Task Force. By developing several certified in-house instructors, the department has increased access to specialized training while reducing expenses associated with sending personnel to training programs outside the area. This designation affirms Adair County Sheriff’s Department’s efforts to create a safer, more secure environment for all who live and work here.
