This week, members of the Kirksville Fire Department trained on water rescue techniques. These events are often traumatic in nature and require rescuers to enter the water with spinal immobilization equipment to safely extricate them from the water.

So, this training was a refresher on using that equipment, and the techniques used to stabilize a patient’s head and neck and get them out of the water. Training opportunities such as these help ensure KFD staff are prepared to act in these kinds of emergencies.

Thanks to Kirksville Parks and Recreation for letting us train at the Aquatic Center as a controlled environment. Future trainings to build on these techniques will occur at local bodies of water.

The City of Kirksville congratulates Mikey Bishop on 20 years of service with the Kirksville Fire Department.

Bishop started at KFD as a part-time firefighter before quickly being hired on full-time. During his career, he advanced through the ranks from Firefighter to Captain, then finally to Division Chief.

He is currently in an administrative role overseeing all fire-related training, including new hire training. He is now learning to live with the fact that he has been around long enough to start training new hires who are the same age as his kids.

We thank Bishop for 20 years of dedicated service to the community and look forward to many more ahead.

We're sure you have great plans to celebrate the Fourth of July this year, and we're not upset you didn't invite us. If you really don't want a visit from us, make sure to follow these tips and use fireworks safely this holiday season.

• Fireworks should only be ignited by an adult

• Fireworks should only be used outdoors in an open space clear of spectators, buildings, vehicles, debris and flammable materials, or on a driveway, sidewalk, or other fire-resistant material

• Keep spectators a safe distance away from permissible fireworks at a minimum of 25 feet for ground items

• Never ignite fireworks during high winds, where flying sparks can start a fire

• Keep a bucket of water handy

• Be sure kids around fireworks know to stop, drop and roll if their clothing catches fire

• Deposit sparklers in a metal container, as they may be stepped on while hot or lost in the grass

• Don’t place used fireworks in combustible trash cans or bags

• Never try to re-ignite fireworks that malfunction or fail to go off

• Don’t wear loose clothing when using fireworks

• Never experiment or make your own fireworks

• Never carry fireworks in your pocket

• Pets may be frightened by the noise or lights of fireworks, so keep them inside

The Kirksville Fire Department is teaming up with the Adair County Health Department, CAPNEMO and other first responders for the Battle of the Badges Backpack Drive.

This month, you can drop off new backpacks at KFD, which will then go to local students this upcoming school year. Every backpack makes a difference for those in our community, and this friendly competition helps students in need have the necessary supplies.

The Kirksville Fire Department will begin its annual hydrant flushing the week of June 1. This year’s flushing will be done from south of Potter Avenue and Northtown Road to Illinois Street, and south of Normal Avenue to the southern city limits.

This process is done to confirm flow and make sure hydrants are in working condition.

The process may produce a temporary color change in tap water. If citizens notice this change in water color, simply run water until it clears. There is no safety hazard, and no boil advisory is necessary.

Residents should use caution when driving around crews and if water is on the roadway.
