The Kirksville Police Department has been in existence for more than one hundred and fifty years. In the very early days of Kirksville, in the 1830's and 40's, the Police Department was staffed by one officer who was better known as the town Constable or the Town Marshal. From the one person Department of then, the Department has evolved into a modern, community oriented, full-service police agency with 25 full time officers.

The Kirksville Police Department has arrested two suspects following multiple reports of theft from motor vehicles.

These thefts occurred in the overnight hours of Tuesday, August 25, in the areas of Leisure Drive, Kellwood Drive, East Jefferson Street, East Washington Street, South Halliburton Street and Shannon Lane. Some of the reports stated fi****ms were taken from vehicles.

KPD arrested one adult suspect and one juvenile following the investigation of these incidents. The adult male is identified as 19-year-old Konner J. Clark, of Kirksville. Clark is currently being held at the Adair County Detention Facility pending the filing of formal criminal charges related to the theft. The juvenile suspect was turned over to the Adair County Juvenile Office.

The common denominator in these recent thefts is that the vehicles were left unlocked. Kirksville Police would like to remind citizens that the two best ways to avoid being a victim of theft from your vehicle are to make sure your vehicle is locked anytime it is left unattended, and do not leave items of value in your vehicle.

Criminal charges are mere accusations and the defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.

The Kirksville Police Department made two arrests Tuesday, July 21, following a report of a stolen vehicle.

KPD responded to a call about a stolen vehicle at approximately 3:27 am in the 500 block of North Ely Street. While an officer was on scene taking the victim's report, the stolen vehicle returned to the area. The white 2016 Ford Focus fled as officers attempted to stop it. Officers pursued the vehicle as it meandered around town. As it appeared headed outside the city, officers deployed a tire deflation device near North Baltimore Street and Park Plaza.

The device stopped the vehicle, and the suspects fled on foot into the surrounding neighborhood, where officers quickly took them into custody.

Gabe Wachter, 19, of Kirksville, and Bella Brown, 20, of Kirksville, have both been charged with Tampering with a Motor Vehicle and Resisting/Interfering with Arrest, Detention or Stop.

KPD asks residents near Park Plaza and Broadlawn Drive to check their yards for any items the suspects may have discarded as they ran from police. Firework sales may have begun, but here is a reminder that fireworks may only be used within the City of Kirksville from June 30 to July 5, between the hours of 9:00 am and 11:00 pm, on your own property.

However, if a complaint is received and verified by the Kirksville Police Department as a disturbance of the peace, discharging shall immediately cease. Those complaints can be made on the non-emergency line at 660.665.5621.

Please be courteous and respectful to your neighbors with your Independence Day celebrations.

During this time of year, the City receives messages from residents who either want the window for selling and using fireworks extended or want fireworks prohibited. The City Council has decided to keep the current regulations in place. Please use caution when lighting fireworks to prevent injuries and property damage.

The Kirksville Police Department is teaming up with the Adair County Health Department and CAPNEMO for the Battle of the Badges Backpack Drive.

This month, you can drop off new backpacks at KPD or other first responder agencies, which will then go to local students this upcoming school year. Every backpack makes a difference for those in our community, and this friendly competition helps students in need have the necessary supplies.

The City of Kirksville recognizes National Police Week from May 10 to May 16, 2026.

There are more than 800,000 law enforcement officers serving in communities across the United States, including the dedicated members of the Kirksville Police Department. The men and women of the Kirksville Police Department play an essential role in safeguarding the community they serve and reside in.

May 15 of each year is Peace Officers Memorial Day, recognizing officers killed in the line of duty.

The Kirksville Police Department remembers Night Marshal John Wesley Rose, who was killed on duty on November 17, 1930. Rose is buried in Maple Hills Cemetery in Kirksville.

The Kirksville Police Department is participating in Northeast Regional Medical Center’s "Jars of Love" peanut butter drive! We will be collecting jars of peanut butter to donate to The Food Pantry of Adair County. If you would like to donate, you can drop off jars of peanut butter during normal business hours (8 AM to 5 PM, Monday-Friday). Kirksville Police will also be present at the “Fill the Truck Event” in the Hy-Vee parking lot between 9 AM and 1 PM on Saturday, March 21, 2025. Please help us help a good cause and collect as many donations as possible.
