Today marks National Medal of Honor Day, a time where we honor those who have gone above and beyond the call of duty in service to our country and to others.

Throughout today, Medal of Honor Recipients will visit the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, announce the 2021 Citizen Honors Awardees, and participate in events throughout the country honoring all 3,507 Medal of Honor Recipients.

We had some great mentorship opportunities this week! CMSgt Rob DeGennaro and CMSgt (Sel) Scott came over to share their experiences and answer questions out team members had, and today we got to have CMSgt (Ret) Patrick McFarlin come talk share some of his stories while teaching Air Force bullet writing skills and techniques!

Thank you all for your time to further mentor our team and help them learn and grow through your experiences!

Congratulations to SrA Austin Norris who was selected as the 2020 Base Honor Guard Member of the Year!!!

SrA Norris led 22 funerals as either the Non-Commissioned Officer In Charge of the Pallbears or as the Non-Commissioned Officer in Charge of the Firing Party, and led 8 times as the Non-Commissioned Officer In Charge of the Colors Team. He also served as the Base Honor Guard’s Vehicle Control Officer, tracking and maintaining 3, 15 passenger vans accumulating over 7,000 miles combined. He also supported numerous joint missions with the Army and Navy Local Honor Guard teams as well as coordinated a interment flag for the United States Customs and Border Patrol Honor Guard Team. Much of his efforts (even more than posted here) helped the Base Honor Guard win the 377th Force Support Squadron Team of the First Quarter 2020!

Our team for 2020 endured the brunt of the COVID-19 pandemic, constantly adapted to changing Health Protection Conditions and State restrictions.

They consistently evaluated Wing, State, and CDC guidelines and worked hard to ensure we properly honored our fallen comrades across 43,334 square miles of New Mexico and Utah. The team provided final honors to 200 Airmen who had passed away, constructed new innovative ways through videos to provide Color Guard support to Base functions to be able to carry over our traditions through these tough times.

Thank you all and the rest of the 2020 Team Kirkland Base Honor Guard team members for all of the hard work and innovations we developed, and preparing the 2021 team to carry on Sharp, Crisp, and Motionless!

Please join us in congratulating A1C Austin Norris for being selected for Senior Airman Below-The-Zone!

A1C Norris has served on our team since the beginning of 2020, managing our vehicles, rifles, munitions, in addition to being one of our lead trainers. All while assisting the Base Honor Guard Program through the uncharted territories of the pandemic.

He will return to being a valuable member within the Security Forces on Kirtland soon, but it has been our distinct pleasure of having such a confident, competent, and caring Airman be a part of our team!

Senior Airman(SrA) Below-The-Zone is a competitive promotion opportunity for our A1Cs who stand out amongst their peers to be selected for promotion to SrA six month early.

Airman Carmello has been integral to our mission of “To Honor With Dignity” and has ensured we provide the best honors for our Airmen that have passed away and when called upon for ceremonial support!

What a great surprise!

Airman First Class Austin Norris, our lead trainer and vehicle manager has been assisting and leading Kirtland Air Force Base members in support of Air Force COVID-19 measures! TSgt Walker recognized his passion to help others after several events and wanted to ensure he was properly recognized and the 377th Air Base Wing Commander, Colonel David Miller, Vice Commander Colonel Ryan Nye, and 377 ABW CCC - CMSgt Robert Stamper took time out of their busy day to recognize his dedicated efforts!
